Case vs Victorinox

I would never think of comparing these two.

That said, alox wins. Not the Pioneer though. Get the Harvester/7. That hawkbill blade is ultrasexxx!

I am thinking of ordering a SAK pioneer for the alox scales but also like the Case Sodbuster Jr. All I hear about is how bad Case’s QC is. Is it really that bad?

I have both. If I were going to choose to keep one it would be the Pioneer. The Pioneer is one of my favorite knives and gets carried a fair bit.

Case QC has greatly improved over the last few years, so it's not an issue of build quality. I find the blade shape on the Pioneer to be far more useful than that of the Sodbuster. And I find myself using the tools, as well.

I'm a fan of both, but in a VS. battle, Victorinox wins handily. I've actually had very good luck with Case QC myself, but I don't discount the experience of those who have experienced otherwise. If you do go with a Pioneer, I strongly suggest going the extra mile and getting the Pioneer X. Having a small pair of scissors on you really captures the essence of what carrying an SAK is all about.

YES. Great suggestion.

A 3-layer Alox feels like a 2-layer cellidor, meaning its thickness is in the sweet spot for most people.

I used to think "I'm not a scissors guy," but the Classic changed that. It's done its share of emergency manicures, and other scissorly tasks. I'm sure you'll find a use for the scissors if you get the X model.

I like Case but not sodbusters, not much use for that type of blade. The Vic would be a whole lot more useful. I carried a Harvester for several years at work and it sure did come in handy.

I didn’t know that. I was staying way from the X model because it was 3 layers but I do love the scissors. I’ll take a look at that
Alox scales are thinner, so my Farmer (which has a saw for a third layer) is the same thickness as my two layer Tinker. The scissors, I'm told, are a little thicker than the saw, but you would barely feel the difference. If you love scissors, pioneer X is a no brainer.

A friend of mine has a hardware store and sells Case. Awhile back I wanted a 3 blade knife. We checked every 3 blade Case in his inventory, 59 total, and in every one the blades touched and had marks. I've had 2+ dozen SAK and one had a blade that touched ; I got it used so no telling how it happened.

Some will only buy US made items. This helps Case sell.

I have both, but just use the Victorinox, even though I like the look of the Case more...

Personally, I say buy both, you will find uses for both. The Victorinox will definitely have better fit and finish as well as bringing other tools to the table. As for the quality of Case, they make a good working knife. We often forget on these forums that most of us knife nuts are more picky about our knives than the majority of knife users, and for 95+% of users any Case knife is good to go.

If you are OCD or a perfectionist the Vic will come closer to satisfying your needs but neither are gonna be absolutely perfect in every way although the Vic will be pretty close. There’s nothing wrong with todays Case knives as long as you don’t expect perfection. I own many of each brand and enjoy both. For actual in the field use I find the SAK much handier than any “blade only” kinda knife. You can’t tighten screws or pry with a Case knife like you can with a SAK.

For scissors, get a Micra. All my SAKs with scissors have broken springs. (Never broken an Omega spring, BTW). I stay away from 3-layer SAKs, too. I like my Farmer, but only carry it in the woods. For every day, two layers is my max.

I have seen bad Cases, but mostly they are great. They have an undeserved bad reputation online. I think the people upset about Case maybe just havent bought a Case in a long time? The cheaper yellow delrin knives like the jr. may get less qc attention in my experience. But all great knives.
If you have to get just one, the Vic will be more useful. Youll be like Mcguyver. Or Mcgruber. Lol

Theyre both about same quality, but victorinox is better value for money in my opinion, and they both make good knives.
