I'm considering my first Case knife and wonder which is the better choice: Chrome Vanadium or Tru-Sharp?

Thanks for the advice.

Either one will do fine for EDC. I like CV because it will take a patina. It seems to be reported that the CV will hold an edge slightly longer, but I have not been able to tell the difference.

The CV takes and holds a killer edge, but it will patina with use (a lot of guys like that) and may rust if neglected. (Here, by the way, is a link to all the CV knives that Case makes.)

If the stainless on a Victorinox SAK is good enough for you, you'll likely find no fault with Case's stainless. If you're a steel snob, you won't think too much of it.

You can't really go wrong with either. I personally prefer CV, but a lot of nice patterns and handle materials aren't available with that steel. CV is a carbon steel, but if you're like me and don't like patina, it's still easy to keep the blades bright and shiny. Just keep 'em clean and oiled and you'll have no worries.

I like CV myself - but then again, I am a sucker for patina.

I don't think you can go wrong with either frankly.

A side note: I see MANY more patterns "in the wild" in the stainless... It would appear to be more popular among the general public (non-knife-nuts) :)

Thanks!

I much prefer the CV, but then I like a patina on a blade.

I do believe it holds an edge better than Tru Sharp also.

I won't buy a Stainless Case unless it's in a premium steel ( BG42, 154cm). CV is the way to go for me. It just loves to get sharp, really easily.

It's too bad they don't make more models in CV.

Lately I've been buying GEC, and Queen ( 1095 and D2 respectively). They fit my needs better.

I just got a trapperlock for a new work knife. I opted for the SS. 420HC is far from exotic, and I'd prefer the edge holding of the CV. But, my work knives get exposed to so many chemicals that I need the extra corrosion resistance. I'll live with touching up the edge more often. Let your intended use decide for you.
