okay...this is like a star wars vs star trek debate at the comic-con. i was just glad i didn't have to watch brosnan and halle go back and forth with those rediculously lame puns and sexual innuendo for two hours. the first brosnan film was cool but i like the new guy.
every action film today HAS to start with an action sequence. it's like hollywood protocol. you almost never see one without it. this gent coulda used a little more charm but he would have had to sacrifice some of his brawn to make it work and frankly i liked seein him just kick some tail.
finally, those old movies were already made!!! how many times would you ask a band to rewrite the same album? we may have been criticizing it for being the same as the old ones if that had happened anyway. 'monotony of franchise' or whatever.
I believe thats what screenwriters call a "preliminary slammer". Begin a movie with the tailend/highpoint/climax of a separate story, its grabs the audiences attention, THEN begin the main story. The Bond films pretty much started that trend. Its been working for over 4 decades. The early Bond flicks may seem dated and a little cliched to a modern audience but in the context of their time and in their own way they were innovative and new. The preliminary slammer has become pretty much standard formula for all blockbusters.
I guess a newer variation would be "the Non-linear Preliminary slammer", show an action highpoint as an opening scene then have the central character flashback to what led up to the opening scene (for an example think "Fight Club" intro scene).
