Casio G shock????

I was a long time G-Shock collector, but stopped a year or two ago. If you closely examine the inside of the newer G-Shocks, They just aren't built as tough as the older 80's and 90's models. The pinnacle of the solar G-Shock survival watch was probably either the G-2300B or the GW-200 Frogman. They have a far more reliable solar setup than the newer solar models. A larger solar cell. Absolutely bomb proof construction. You can buy spare bezels and straps to keep one going for the next fifty years. And the crystal protection is excellent.

If you don't dig solar, and there are some compelling reasons, reach for a DW-6900 or DW-6600. They are both based on the same design, with just different modules. The modules are very durable. The cases are tough. Bezel protection is good. Lots of replacement bezels and straps are available.

I personally don't wear a G-Shock in the outdoors. DEET tends to dry out the rubber bezels, and causes them to crack prematurely. I prefer either my St. Moritz Titan 2 or a Luminox.

I would definately go with the tough solar/atomic versions   . I've had mine fo r3 years now and love it. I tried one of the pathfinders (not worth the hype or trouble) It all depends on your needs. My opinion FWIW.

I've had my eye on this one for a while, will someone buy it for me?

I've had the GW1400DA-1AV for about 5 years. It started acting funny after I had it in a dark bag for a week. I tried to have a local watch guy fix it and was told they where unrepairable. I found a web page that covered the proceedure step by step with pictures, it's a little tricky but not difficult. The watch has worked perfectly since.

the basic ones have served me well.

i think i've only had two since G-shocks came out, and i SCUBA with mine.

they are tough enough.

The G-Shock has never failed me, been in the field with it for a few years now and works fantastic.

Also, I like the wave Ceptor, a Atomic watch that is nice, also like to know what time it is nomatter the country. :D

I have an old atomic solar g-shock from the late 1990's that still tells atomic time.
The light no longer works and I can't seem to use the alarm anymore.
It died once, I left it in a window exposed to the sun for a few weeks and it came back!
Still running.

How do the G-Shocks stack up against the Timex Ironman Shocks? That's what I've been wearing lately. I didn't do a lot of research before buying. I just saw this model at Target, liked the features, and plunked down my credit card.

G-Shocks are generally better made, and have far superior long term support. Once you buy a Timex, you're pretty much on your own if anything goes wrong. I have a G-Shock that's over 20 years old, and I can still buy parts for it.

With that said, Timex digital modules blow away Casio modules in the features department. It's not even a contest. The module features of this Timex Shock make a Casio G-Shock look like a child's play toy:

That's good to know. I recently messed up a band (my fault) on the Timex, and I ordered three replacements just so I would have extras in case anything else happened. Sounds like I made a good choice as far as stocking up on those.

I have an atomic solar G-Shock - model 2688, I believe. Calibrates itself with the Colorado Springs atomic clock every morning, keeps a charge as long as it gets some occasional light. I don't use any of the other functions on it, but it's got a stop watch, time stamp feature, multiple alarms, and multiple time zone settings.

This is the one I have. I've been wearing it for over 6 years with absolutely no problems. It's almost time for a new band, however.

I have a few watches, but the G-Shock is the one I use in the woods. I have one of these:

Im really happy with this. This is actually a really ugly watch, which is a good thing when travelling; Id propably get robbed with a nicer watch :foot: It also has all sorts of nice functions, like a small memory slot for numbers etc, a good dual-time, counter etc.

Btw, I have actually used this between temperatures +100C/212F (sauna) and -30C/-22F, and its still ticking. The best part about this watch though is the price; about 40USD ;)

i have a pathfinder and its an alright watch. its got a whole wack of features that arent very accurate.

the compass doesnt seem to work right, altimeter works ok, barometer works great, and keeps time well (due to the atomic time setting).

i got it as a gift and like the fact that its solar powered. barometer is nice and helps predict weather trends. altimeter is ok when you calibrate it often. compass doesnt work for jack.

it has world time which is nice because i have family in another country. it has a countdown timer which is useful and a stop watch which sees alot of use. oh yeah it has 5 alarm clocks.

other than the crappy compass the casio pathfinder (pag-80 is the model i have i think) it is a great watch.

if you require something a bit more rigorous and dont need the extra features, i suggest getting the mudman.

I couldnt have put it better myself.

Im kinda surprised im not seeing more Suunto's in this thread. Theyre more precise than the Protreks/Pathfinder and where im from theyre pretty big with the outdoors people.

Im not ready to by a new watch as of yet but my timberland shows its age which is i think about 9-10 year already. I had to replace the battery once only, the strap 3 times. But every few months it would stop working for few hours and i need to set the time again. How good is the solar charger in the G shock??? or is it better to just replace the battery?? All i use my watch for is tell me what time it is and the date. But i like them rugged so i dont worry about breaking them. It seems the mudman is high on the list on here.
