I was a long time G-Shock collector, but stopped a year or two ago. If you closely examine the inside of the newer G-Shocks, They just aren't built as tough as the older 80's and 90's models. The pinnacle of the solar G-Shock survival watch was probably either the G-2300B or the GW-200 Frogman. They have a far more reliable solar setup than the newer solar models. A larger solar cell. Absolutely bomb proof construction. You can buy spare bezels and straps to keep one going for the next fifty years. And the crystal protection is excellent.
If you don't dig solar, and there are some compelling reasons, reach for a DW-6900 or DW-6600. They are both based on the same design, with just different modules. The modules are very durable. The cases are tough. Bezel protection is good. Lots of replacement bezels and straps are available.
I personally don't wear a G-Shock in the outdoors. DEET tends to dry out the rubber bezels, and causes them to crack prematurely. I prefer either my St. Moritz Titan 2 or a Luminox.
