Cast Away... what an incredably dumb movie

not2sharp:
good point, hard to suspend the laws of physics, except for Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 2 and his anti gravity sphere.
That killed me!

Greg,
In your Chapter 11 list you mention "Pemicum".....does this mean "Pemican" (from Canadian dialects).....ie, pounded, dried meat mixed with berries?

Thanks,
Diligence

Spelling errors... hmmmmmmmmm.... thanks, I'll have to make sure that I did that on the web and not in the text

I wanted to scream when he passed out with the flashlight still on, I swore I was going to get up and leave if he managed to eat that crab raw, and I was complaining bitterly to my wife about how the idiot could have used the material from the life raft to make a sail, and the material from the dead guy's clothing for cordage.

But I howled when he tried to open that coconut, (It's tricky to do even with a sharp machete!) and I thought I was gonna wet myself when he looked at that plate full of crablegs at the party!

Oddly, I didn't see ANYTHING foolish or unreasonable in the concept of "Wilson."
I mourned the loss of Wilson right along side the character.

You can talk about mindset til the cows come home, but the fact is, we are human, and humans are by nature, a social animal.
We crave contact, and we have a need to reach out to others.
When we are deprived of that, we often find something else to form a relationship with.
No one laughs at the idea of an elderly person living alone being super attached to a pet, (even if it IS an annoying yip dog) and science has proven that solitary elders with pets, live longer than solitary elders without.
So yeah, I'd talk to Wilson.
I'd do whatever I had to do to keep from going stark raving mad.

I have to say, yes a lot of mistakes were made, but then real people in real survival situations usually make a few mistakes too.
If you put 10,000 people in that situation, maybe 20 would survive the four years, and of those 20, maybe ONE would do better than the character in the movie did.
People learn enough to survive and then they survive as long as they can and that's what it's all about isn't it?

You don't have to see this at the theater, but I DO recommend you see it!
(Even if we did give away all the "good stuff")
Watch it and consider what he did wrong, what ELSE he could have done.
Even though it's not real, it's still a chance to learn from the mistakes of others.
