Cast Iron/Dutch Oven/Camp-Cooking Recipes

Now I know what's missing from my camp cooking ... the ingredient ... scenery! Eggs ready in the skillet there are looking very tasty, B34NS. Maui. Wow.

Thanks! The view wasn't bad ;)

Another ingredient possibility ...

I only have fridge magnets that make me smile.

You may be able to tell by the faded colours on this one, that for a long time dutch oven cooking and recipe ingredients have been a top priority with me.

Funny, it is fall and I hear scratching coming from the 'tin cat' in the cupboard. Must check it out. Note to self ... also see mini-skinners in the exchange

Dutch Oven's Big Adventure!

It has been a wonderful time of the year to just disappear for a while, stay warm dry and fed ... discover and enjoy.

Stowaway. Tal knows.

Destination is a dead-end old logging road where it touches on a beaver pond. This is a great camp in fall where you can appreciate the full sun exposure and there is easy access to the many forestry roads. Nobody else is ever around. On the way.

Even after some rain, the firewood was plentiful and easy to get going. Salmon, sweet potato and vegetable pasta on the coals.

And, while the dutch oven is cooking dinner, the tent goes up and gear is arranged. I have a dedicated supervisor calling for a little more air.

A lovely end to this busy day.

We will be exploring ...

Dutch Oven's Big Adventure! ... continues

Sunrise over the beaver pond.

The dam is well looked after, strong and is packed along the top with fresh mud.

While exploring, we stayed alert!

Even when warned, meeting a logging truck along these twisty, windy forest access roads and driving off hardpack to give room is tricky. This one was bringing in a skidder. I thought the overhanging tires would take my rearview at least, skin the driver door at most ... but as I looked up to see the huge tires pass my window

... it was a relief to see them edge past. I just winged it ... sticking the camera out the window to catch this pic once it had passed.

Other sights.

And, as always at camp ... coffee's on.

;)

Looks a lot like it does over here.

The Adirondacks are stunningly beautiful! It has been quite a while since I travelled there. :)

Well, it is time the dutch oven saw some daylight, so ...

Easy split pea soup - a winter warming, comfort filler-upper

I am still working to have a system somewhat like Mannlicher uses to cook with briquets ... but in the meantime, I am just using charcoal contained in a metal pan on top of my antique BBQ (not in it) which is on the front stoop and just steps from the kitchen.

A cup of dry split peas, two onions (dry flakes work every bit as well), a bouillon cube (or hambone, shank) ... set to simmer covered (see cook time on specific package - it differs)

Add chopped carrots (dry could work too) for last 1/2 hour of simmering

Peas and carrots need to cook until very soft for creamy soup

Can be served as is or mashed, put through a blender or sieve. Add salt, pepper, butter (if desired), parsley. Fat lends creaminess and flavour.

Ready to dip bannock, warm your soul and stog the powerhouse!

Here's to 2016, International Year of Pulses (IYP)
