Cast of Squids on the 11TH

From left to right the cast of characters are: Larry T aka TBlade, Dave Schott aka TikTock, Justin Mercier (played by himself), Louis Tottorich aka Rocketmann.

Larry T

Thank you, Larry. It is always nice to put faces with names.

Looks like you had a great time. Dammit, Beave, watch out for the kid with the knive in his hand. That glove was white when he started! :D

 WWhhooee,,Higgy, you're right about one thing, the glove was white to begin with, but you've the wrong idea. Dave got tired of hammering with his right hand, so he tried to hammer with his left. You should see the mess underneath that "RED" glove, hehehe :D

Having picked up a bunch of 1084 1 x 1/4 bar stock from Dave (TikTock) and having seen the nice neck knives Lary (T Blade) was working on yesterday, I decided today it was about time I actually forged my first ever blade. (I dont think the few railroad spikes i've turned into bladeshaped letter openers count)

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so here I am, flattering T Blade. =) I probably should have played with some of the 1084, but i had a simmonds file sitting in a box of 'scrap' tools I got at a yardsale and decided to use it first.

Here's the results of the forging on my first real knife. Very similar to the ones Lary was finishing up (hey I liked the design!)

(5 inches in length for size refrence)

I'm not sure if i should have ground the teeth off the edges of the file before forging it down, but it's a little late for that now. I havent a clue what the file is made of, but it sparks like a SOB when I put it to the grinder, so some generic high carbon steel probably. I'll try to figure out how to heat treat and quench it to get it hard to hold an edge once i grind the blade surface down, i'm going to try to keep some of the 'file' look at the top of the blade, and through the handle area though.

I just want to thanks you guys that clean up. It was the best shape that my shop was ever left in after a HI. :D

Justin, the blade looks real good for a first effort using knife steel instead of RR spikes :D .

I am flattered and confused  , but, I'm sure that basic design that I was hammering out at the first HI you attended at IG's, has been made by hundreds of real bladesmiths. If you noticed at the 11/11 HI, of the total of 11 knives of that series, there are no 2 alike, which is part of the beauty of hammering out the blade :D .

Justin, Happy Hammering

By the way, please use 2 "r's" when spelling my name, Thanks :D

Larry, what's your ethnic ancestry, if you don't mind me asking? I'm half Slovenian (mother was Podboj) and my wife's half Croatian (father is Uremovich). Thanks.

Well Fitzo,

Seeing as you ask, my mothers maden name is Gelineau, very French, and her liniage is from Quebec, Canada since the 1700's, and also my fathers lineage is from Quebec, since the 1700's, so I guess that makes me a Canuck  , although I don't speak much French at all  .

LOL, I didnt mean in any way to infer that you had created that style of type of blade, just that your having pounded out 11 of them inspired me to create one of the same type =) I love the fact that no two hammered blades are alike, it just adds to the uniqueness of the craft

Thanks for telling me, Larry! I expected to hear "Serbian" or "Croatian" because it reads like a name from that neck of the woods to me with that "ich" at the end. Didn't expect "Cannuck". :) Ancestry.com had a surprise for me, too, when I plugged Tortorich into their search engine.

Hope you didn't mind my asking. It was the first time I've read your last name before. Name origins have always interested me.

Thanks, again. :)

That's what I read, Louis....they said it originated as Tortorici in Messina, Sicily, was changed to Tortorice along the way and Americanized to Tortorich.
