Cat fishing Bait choice

I'll have to remember the beef liver although around here chicken livers are cheaper. Harder to find as they aren't sold as widely because of the hormones and stuff they feed the chickens these days turning them orange and gold.

interesting. never heard that..

beef liver is cheap man.. 1.50 - 2.50 here for a package.

switch to beef livers.. works just as good and stays on the hook better. you buy it frozen

I should have added this to my earlier post, it completely slipped my mind. I've used it quite a bit and while I don't catch near the quantity of fish on it as I do on chicken liver, the fish tend to be considerably bigger. I've never caught any little nibblers on beef liver.

we did a contest of beef liver vs chicken liver a few times growing up. keep in mind we fished like it was the only thing on the planet to do. chicken livers did win but you used twice as much bait (bc it comes off easy) but the beef livers did catch many fish (i think the difference was approx 4-5 fish) and you only used a portion of the bait. that being said i said to hell with chicken livers. the damn smell makes me want to puke. ill take beef liver any day of the week. Now we have done this, take beef liver and soak it in chicken liver with great results... cat fishing is fun. you can catch them on a lot of things.

my all time favorite bait is live bream. you dont catch as many cats but when you do they are usually well over a couple pounds. plus you have chance to catch monster crappie (i caught one 3.6 lbs 3 yrs ago) and monster bass. my cousin landed a bass 12 midnight that snapped his 15lb line. we saw it hop out of the water.. it was HUGE! 9lbs+ easy.. no stretch either.

I've been using frozen mackerl and I aint cought sht. Everybody here uses it but they dont catch sht either. I guess I will take some of the suggestions I have heard here and try them next weekend... Thanks

I have a friend who is a river rat. Hes lived on the Mississippi all his life. He tells me uncooked shrimp is his favorite bait.

guess I'll have to rub the two cents in my pocket together and pick up some a those shrumps...

Cutbait has been my most consistent bait. I fish mainly for channel catfish in lakes. Fish it on the bottom shallow or a 1.5-2ft below a float depending on the situation. I catch a lot of big bass with the bobber rig. Most of my bait is either bluegill or green sunfish. I occasionally fish one live. Don't get many fish that way but they tend to be bigger ones that do bite.

When the conditions are right, red hot dogs work well for 2-lb and under cats. They sell hot dogs out here that are dyed bright red and spiced (Wimmer's and Fairbury are the brands) and the little cats just eat that stuff up like wild on the right day.
