Cat Knock-off?

I just saw a used Cat for sale. The shape and markings look good except the blade is stamped 440C. Everything I read here and at spyderco.com says the Cat has an S30V blade. Did they ever sell Cats with 440C blades?

I'm not a collector, I'm a user. I have nothing against 440C that is properly heat treated (as I would expect from Spyderco). I just don't want to give good money to a forger. If he lies about the maker of the knife, what's to say it's really 440C or if he'll even ship the knife after I pay?

Thanks,
Steve

Spyderco originally released the Cat not too long ago (maybe a year or so), but there were issues and production ceased. They re-released the Cat and Chicago with 440c and G10 instead of S30V and CF (like on the original models).
My Cat has a good heat treat, and i'm happy with the 440c .

Here's a picture of my cat. I added some jimping to increase the grip factor that it was lacking for the small offering. After the Golden run they made, they put them out in 440C from the Taiwan. I think it's a great small carry knife and with the G10, hard to beat at the price.

For the record, the Cat (and the Chicago) were never made in Golden. Just like the current G-10/440C versions, the original CF/S30V ones were made in Taiwan.

I got one for a friend as a gift for Christmas (G10/440c version) - it struck me as being a mini-version of the Sage (only with G10). I with they would have polished the liners and added jimping, but for the price, its an amazing knife as is.

I scooped up one of the original Cats when they were available. I know there were some production issues and they were discontinued but to this day I cannot find anything wrong with mine.
It's an awesome little knife and one I will never let go:)

This may sound strange, but I prefer G10 over CF. I had the Sage 1 CF (which I assume is/was similar to the CF Cat). I preferred the G10 Cat and returned the Sage 1. The 440C is fine (I do like S30V though). If I could ever find a original S30V Cat I would swap the steel and keep the G10.

Overall great knife. I carry it on occasion. I've recently obtained a Native 5 G10, so that's my primary EDC.

Thanks for the info Deacon, I figured from the S30V and CF that it was a Golden product. It's still a "golden" knife for sure in such a small package.
