Catch me up on guitars

If I were to purchase another guitar, I would go with a British brand that I played and really like. It was around $250 or so and made in Britain. I don't think it's Baily. I don't know the brand maybe a Brit will pipe up as it's a big brand over there but only recently are there guitars making it into US stores. I've never seen that brand at Sam Ash or Guitar Center though. You may want to check out a small music shop. You may find a small music shop that just deals with guitars. They can really help you out.

My current guitar is an Alvarez which I paid about $250 for, which I like a lot. I have owned better, such as a Martin, worth four times that...I liked that one a lot but it was wasted on me so I traded it for something else, specifically a gun. I think after a point, they all sound the same unless you have a really well tuned ear and your looking for something particular in the sound.

Take a trip to Mandolin Brothers in Staten Island. They have a big selection of new, used and vintage stuff and are probably the most knowledgeable guys in the country. Cool place to visit.

I'd vote for the Seagull guitars as well. I have a Seagull S6 which has been sounding nicer and nicer since I bought it 3 years ago. I think they are an incredible guitar for the money.

I'd say spend time in music stores playing with them until you find one that "speaks to you".

+1 to this... which is why I have more guitars than I need yet they all have a place and a purpose.
Take a friend is another good option, take your time and walk out of a shop that doesn't give you the time.
Oh, and consider the Little Martin or the Baby taylor as compact and transportable yet playable guitars. The Backpacker never did it for me. They're also cheap enough (well arguably) that damage doesn't frighten you.
