Well I've now done the first and by far the biggest of the moving trips to Mississippi. And during this time I have taken my grandads old 'shack' of a shop and made it into a knife shop by myself. Now I've never done any wiring, so there was a learning curve as you will see. I'm going to do the pics as before and after in pairs. But before we get all 'up to date' we've got to delve back into the history of this old shack. This could get long, but I've left BF out of the updates because my service in Ms right now is absolute garbage. I doubt I'll be able to print shipping labels there before the fiber (coming) gets run. In addition to the history and the before and after of the temp shop at the shed, my excellent contractor has made much progress on the new store which will be named Woody's Place after my grandad Woody.

Jumping back to catch anyone who's out of the loop on the ground this story stands on, on April 1 I was informed that the gentleman I had been subleasing from was getting evicted. That means I had 30 days to move also. I checked out a few local shops where very generous men offered to share their shop space w me. I was hesitant on each for different reasons, mostly abilities and safety concerns. My wife, boss, best friend and a human way smarter than me reminded me of my grandads shed at the property in Mississippi. It had power. He wasn't a craftsman exactly, he was more of a retired guy with a huge garden on 150 acres. A tinkerer. Is that a word? But he died years ago and my dad has been using it to store lawn equipment. Maybe turning a light on once in a while.

Now were up to weekend before last. On April 17 I drove to Batesville to do two things. 1. I needed to check out how much power in amps was available in the shed. 2. I was scheduled to meet the county Zoning Variance Board on that Monday for a hearing on whether I could get a variance for the new building from agricultural to manufacturing/retail. Now I had 60 amps to work with in the shed, so I set to work figuring out the wiring, and learning to wire circuits. As you can imagine, none of the damn wiring was working. You can see from the before pics that the boxes were all kind of janky. Finally I went and bought a new box and started from scratch. This was my best decision of the weekend. By the end of the weekend I had most of the wiring done and the shed was clean and much better organized. On Monday I was approved for my variance, and was happy and intimidated by the upcoming steps.

Tuesday April 14, I headed home, and went straight to the shop in Norcross GA to continue packing up.

Wed April 15 myself, Carley and Jake packed all day.

Thursday April 16 myself, Carley and Jake and a few of the most kind, generous, and special men to me who volunteered for a day of utter hell packed the 26' Uhaul.

Friday April 16 I drove the truck to Ms starting at 4 am with my lovely wife Leah following me. When we got there we unloaded roughly half of the truck. (The light stuff, relatively.)

Saturday April 16 I had helpers to unload the remaining, and very heavy and dangerous stuff in the truck.

Sunday I rested and enjoyed my parents and my wife. My body was wracked. I felt like hell.

Monday I was back into the shed trying to move tools over and organize and finalize. Leah and I were heading home on Thursday (today) so I had a few days to get everything situated and running. And I did this. As of yesterday evening I have the shed all set up and organized and clean and powered and ready to make knife #1 next week when I return. Thank God.

Tomorrow I'll be loading up a drag behind small Uhaul trailer and next tuesday I'm driving back to finish the FIRST move and get started making knives again.

NOW...

To update the new building a lot happened while I've been back and forth. Firstly the variance was approved. It turns out that that will basically serve as a permit and business license for as long as I own the property. Never heard of anything like that, but there it is. Miracle from God compared to GA. In addition the first round of gravel is in the parking lot, and the framing is mostly done, and the meter base and panel are in as well.

Pics.

Remember the pics of the shed getting setup are in before/after order.

That would be neato. There is one more space!

Wow, amazing how quick and efficiently everything seemed to work out for you to get into the shop. Sounds like you need a special run of something to commemorate the permanent shop. Congrats Andy! Can’t wait to see it all come together.

Thanks Andy for the detailed update and photos of Woody’s Shack. You have accomplished much in a short time. I pray that you stay safe and healthy through the rest of the move and set-up there.

Phil

P.S. - I second the idea of you making a collectors series of knives perhaps with a unique pin pattern to identify them as “Shack” knives during this transition period until your new shop is finished being built.

Congratulations, Andy. That’s a hell of a lot of progress in a very short period. You definitely know how to get things done. Wishing you the best of luck in the new shop.

This is awesome! I love the views from your work stations.

Is this building in the image, the shop the name Fiddleback Forge came from?

Somewhat. The recluse is EVERYWHERE on this property. I learned young to watch for and avoid them. But certainly its easy to go into that shed and find a dozen of them...

I agree - I was thinking that you should mark all of the knives made in the shed to denote the significance.

I hope not!!!!
I just remember talking to you about it about 16 years ago at Blade, and you had mentioned you got the idea for the company name from your grandfather's shop.

You should catch the biggest one you can find, and have it encased in acrylic and put it on your desk in the shop.
