Catskills Overnight

Proper practice for camping/hiking. NEVER feed bears !! keep food in proper containers which in turn kept ,like all food prep and eating , about 100 yds from tents etc. Don't cheat ! They have a sense of smell FAR better than any dog you've met and most of their life is spent looking for food. More than one camper ,usually kids , sneaks a back of Fritos into the tent with serious consequence. Yes you can carry pepper spray but you'll rarely need it .Don't get hysterical when you see one .Loud noises are usually enough to drive them off . The closest I've been to an adult bear is 8' and it ignored me ! Firearms ? you would have to know the rules ! Non- residents CANNOT possess a handgun in NYS !
These are only black bears , not the volatile brown of grizzly bears.

All makes sense. Will stress the food point to everyone. As for firearms, not even possible for me, so no worries there. Not too worried, though just want to be prepared.

Not one for feeding wildlife in general, winds up messing up their perception of us. Even if it is just a duck, though I rather be attacked by a duck lol.

Thanks for the information, definitely appreciated.
