Cattaraugus questions

I've noticed on a lot of 225Q's that the leather washers near the middle of the handle appear to be cut/sliced/indented or otherwise damaged. Why is that?
 
MMM - One story regarding those indentations around the handle is that apparently the knives were attached to crates of material, with twisted wire. Every 225Q I've seen has those indentations around the handle.

However, a knife writer named Frank Trzaska called this story a myth in an article called The Q knives of WWII. Toward the end of the article he says that the grooves were intentionally made in the handle by Cattaraugus to aid grip. He makes a point that Case's version (Case #337-6"Q) has 18 groves neatly cut into the handle of their version of the knife, so maybe he's right.
