Picked up this one over at A.G.Russell the other day simply because I like the blade combination.

They call it a Cattleman's Folder at the shop.
Is that what you would call it as well?
Is this a traditional pattern / blade combination?

Hi Karl. Nice... I really like the horn handle on that one. I think it is a traditional pattern/ combination. Your knife has punch blade rather than a spey blade but this is a traditional combination for a stockman or cattleman knife.

Thats a nice knife... A lot different style than the other Ontario RAT knives..

I call a serpentine 3-blade with a clip master blade a "stockman". A stock knife, or stockman is a derivative of a cattle knife, so I guess it could be called either, but I like my way because it's easier to keep straight (errr, serpentine)!

Thanks guys!!

Yes, I was thinking it might be a stockman, however with the punch instead of a spey blade, I wasn't too sure.

I'm sure the issue has been discussed before but - When IS a knife a stockman? I mean, there's other 3-blade pattern knives out there that aren't stockmans (stockmen?). Or would they just be a stockman version (like a whittler for instance)?

In my opinion, the defining characteristic of a whittler is the master blade at one end by itself supported by both springs with the two smaller blades on separate springs at the other end. The stockman has the master blade on its own spring and the two smaller blades at each end of the other sprring. I hope this makes sense.

Here's what Bernie Levine said, in about 1997. 4th edition of Levine's Guide to Knives and Their Values.

Well alright waynorth just brought out the bible for clarification, you don't see him do that very often..:D :D

No, but seriously Karl5 this is the unadulterated truth. This is the industry standard and waynorth is right to site it as such. Your knife is a stock knife or stockmans knife.

To offer further explanation in the visual mode the following is a good example of a true Cattleman's knife. She is slightly more than 4 1/4 inches in length closed and much thicker and twice as heavy as a typical three or four blade stock knife..

Nice knife, sunnyd!
Just because I'm such a nit-picker :grumpy: (I'm a housing Inspector for a living!), I will add a detail to sunnyd's Cattle knife definition. While some have clip blades, the vast majority of historical (older ) ones have spear-point blades. Case made a lot of clips, but most makers used spears. You guys have seen these before maybe, but I never let THAT stop me:D

Better stop there before I get accused of hijacking the thread:eek: !

I have not seen them before, and son, on this light tackle,, those are just beautiful knives:eek: .. waynorth, you never cease to amaze this good ole boy!

I knew I could count on you guys to get a good answer.
Thanks lads!!
Looks like I've gotten myself a premium stock knife in Texas pattern then. :D
Albeit with a slightly unusual blade combination since the second blade is a sheepfoot.
But I like it! :)

It is ALWAYS a pleasure to see you guys treasures.
Waynorth, if you ever want to get rid of any of those Case knives - please let me be the first to know!! I'll take them any day.

Well Karl, I probably should sell them before I buy the farm, not too soon hopefully (he knocks on wood); but right now I'm trying to figure out how to take them with me!!

I know what you mean - one doesn't want to loose ones babies :D
However, the offer is/was honest, so if you DO have to/want to "loose" them... Well, they'd find a nice home with me.

That horse of a Cattleman is making me weak in the knees, Sunny. Must know- brand?

Sword and Shield,
That is a 1st Generation Bulldog Brand. I know what you mean when you say weak in the knees. When I first saw it I knew I had to have it. When you hold this one in your hand with any of the blades out for use you really know you have some substantial steel to work with..:D

I likes dem stockmans, but none of mine are "true" cattleman folders.
