Caught the Sebenza Bug...worse than H1N1

ugh! more sebenza threads, Wish I could afford and handle one. Been years now, still haven't been able to get one. Hopefully one day I can see what all the fuss is about!

I can tell by looking at it that the cutout to access the lock bar would drive me crazy holding it.

Are you refering to the half moon cutout?

When I'm holding it in my right or left hand for that, my index finger rests right above that and my middle finger rest right below it, they don't even come close to falling into the half moon or the frame lock when it's engaged.

It is very comfortable...Before I purchased it I thought that the pocket clip would get in the way, but I can't even feel it while i'm using it.

The ergonomics of this thing are supurb....

I've flipped it open and close probably about 4000 times...

I know exactly what you mean. I recently, found this site and the info has been great but not so good for the wallet.:D

I had lost my buck 110 I had for years and decided to give up and look for another knife. Thats all it took as I was surprised to find such a vast selection to choose from.

I dove in head first and purchased a spec bump, leek and mini mojo. A few days later I purchased an Sog Aegis and BM MiniGrip. All but one purchased this year.

I had my sights on a sage, BM 710 and ZT0350 but, I kept seeing the sebenza and the virus struck me too and not to soon either. Yesterday I gave in and ended up purchasing a new large reg sebenza. I wanted a small for edc but none in stock so...I ordered the large. I can't wait to get it and feel like a kid at christmas. I'm immunized for a while I hope.

The irony is that I found my buck 110 while going through some old packpacks in the garage.

Congrats!

I wouldn't worry about the lockup. At one point, CRK posted that the target was 75%, although most of them I've seen are around 50%.

I have a large Classic that had an engagement of about 2/3 when new. I've carried it and used it for years, and opened and closed it many 100s if not 1000s of times, but the lock bar has not moved any farther along the tang when locked.

I think 2/3 - 75% engagement is a good thing -- the lock is more secure. So don't worry.

There are several reasons to love CR knives, but one of the most important is the absolute commitment to quality. There shouldn't be anything to worry about with the lock tab, but if it bothers you, send it in and they will look at it - and fix it if it is indeed out of spec. Their service is outstanding and long-lived.

Congratulations, use the knife well, and try not to get too frenzied about your next Reeve knife. It didn't work for me, but you can try it :D

I thought the same thing. I can tell by looking at it that the cutout to access the lock bar would drive me crazy holding it. I also just can not warm up to frame locks. They can wear out. Just about every thread has a post talking about % of lock up. I just don't want to have to worry about a lock wearing out. Yeah it might not or it might take years. But it still can happen and that bugs me. Give me an AXIS or ball bearing lock or even a lock back. Never had a problem with those but have had multiple problems with frame and liner locks. But they are very popular so they must work for a lot of people, I'm just not one of them.

All knives wear out. Just like any tool:P. The nice thing about a frame lock, is that you know when to retire them. Its like those toothbrushes with the blue dye. Once it is halfway blue its time to get a new one. Other toothbrushes where out too, just you dont always know when

Well I have a titanium Spyderco Sage and it has a very similar cutout that is terrible for my hand comfort. I just realized that yours look to have similar cutout placement. I'm glad it fits your hand good. I probably shouldn't have said anything because I have not handled one but it just looked so close to the one I have that I assumed it wouldn't be good. I would have to find one to see how it fit my hand.

That might be the case but I have worn out some highly regarded production knives, both liner and frame lock and in a pretty short amount of time. I have an AXIS lock that I have opened thousands of times and has sat in my pocket everyday for a few years and the lock still has a ways to move forward in it's cut out. When it moves all the way forward and develops vertical blade play then I will know it is time to fix it, not retire it, but I doubt it will ever happen. I think the AXIS lock is the best engineered lock out there but that is just my opinion. Maybe if I hadn't had the problems I did I would be more open to them but now they are just not my thing. If the lockbar face ever wears enough so that it travels all the way across the blade tang there isn't much you can do but retire it and I have had it happen to me and don't like it. To each their own.

Good Luck.

The lock-up looks fine.. my boss has had a Small Seb for years and really gives it a workout , it's even been back to CRK for a refurb.

Just to confirm, here's a quote from the FAQ sticky in the CRK subforum:

"The spec position for the lock is to cover 75% of the blade. If it falls naturally further than that, we will adjust it."

- Anne Reeve

:thumbup:Congrats on a great knife! It won't be your last CRK,but of course, you already knew that.;)

Is it just me or does that lock bar look a little too far over for a brand new Seb?

I've seen some hand wringing over this sort of thing before. But I am curious. If the lockbar slides 100% over to the other side, what exactly happens? Does this somehow mean that the knife is no longer usable? Less secure?

When it eventually moves all the way over you might start to feel some bladeplay. Just send it in to CRK and they'll readjust it for you.

i am saving for a sebenza too. i know how you feel that you see it and it is just "i have to have it" luckily where i am at i can go into a knife store and handle one, which i have done and i loved the action. congrats!

With many other manufacturers, I'd be a little worried. With CRK, because of how it is built, designed, and supported, I would not give it a second thought.

Oh, and where can I get a knife with this new H1N1 steel??? ;)

I just don't see all the concern over how far the lock engages the blade on these particular knives - I don't see how the lock bar could ever get far enough across the blade tang to fail.

You don't stab many fridges, do you? ;)

Well my thumbs are really starting to hurt now...lol...probably simulated 3 years of opening and closing in 2 days.

Took it apart aprox. 6 times changing the lubricant, found that a PB Blaster 3in1 oil gives me the smoothest action.

Used it a bit today, cutting some cord and zip ties and opening up bags and boxes, setting up our new generator. Stripped some 8/3 soow cord, cuts like butter.

Still locks up tighter than fort knocks and not a single 1/1000th of a mm of blade play.

Not worried at all.

Just a little saddened....put a very very small chip in the perfect edge, was cutting a 1/4" of electrical tape wrapped up on an old cord, and hit the steel connector edge...

Okay, scratch the 3in1 oil...went through our gun cabinet, and found some old gun grease in the corner...Gunslick Anhydrous Graphitic...smoother than butter now.

I can't get over how easy this thing comes apart and goes back together...you can't screw it up, just tighten all the screws and bam! no adjusting anything....

Small Sebenza 21...where have you been my whole life....!

My mother in law has been watching me take this apart and put it back together and flip it open and close for 2 days straight...she says I need to go to some kind of treatment or therapy.....

^ Funny post! Your mother in law does not know it yet but she will end up going to therapy! The constant opening and closing can drive people nuts that do not understand us! Just remember when taking it apart etc to do it as CRK says on the website (there is a sticky in the CRK subforum also if you are interested). Sometimes one gets a little exited and the washer goes over the busing. You do not want that. Congrats once again!

Maybe the assembly/disassembly is the therapy???

Oil's ok but as you found, grease works really nicely. You should try some of the CRK grease. It's not expensive and it lasts forever because of the excellent syringe applicator.

Sounds like a great knife. Been around for ages and still so hot. Something must be right. Gonna get one too.
