Caught With Your Pants On

I am reminded of the question asked of the man with the pistol on his belt: "are you expecting trouble?" "Why, no, ma'am, if I were expecting trouble, I'd have brought my rifle."

And so it is here. If I were expecting trouble, I'd EDC a full-sized fixed blade.

Very true but my guess is no matter what scenario you throw down, what knife you have is probably not going to be the deciding factor on the outcome. Besides that you'd be surprised what you can get done with a simple slippy.

What I always have with me or in my car (if at work)

Buck 112
Samsung Intensity II
keys/bottle opener
Timex Expedition on leather band
buck 319
Zebra F-701
Streamlight Microstream
wallet

Later in the month I'll probably be changing the buck 319 for a Kershaw Volt II for work

On a typical day, I just carry a large folder, my Wave(w/diamond rod sharpener in sheath), with a Fenix E-01 on my keychain. On occasion, I will also carry my Surefire 6P LED Defender.

Well If I Was Caught With My Pants On I Would Most Likely Have:
Spyderco Chokwe
Spyderco Sage 2 - Possibly
Spyderco Persistence
Puma Red Bone Trapper
Custom SAK OR Victorinox Silver Alox Cadet
Keys - Has On Them - Paracord Keychain - Keys - Whistle - Vic. Classic - Photon Type Flash Light.
Streamlight Microstream
Bic Lighter Or Spectrum Zippo
Cell Phone
Wallet
Paracord Bracelet

Any day, I have this on me at the very least. Recently, my Jetbeam RRT-0 XML has been added in as well. I also always have my cell phone, watch and paracord bracelet on me as well.

That's an interesting Crawford tool you have there. Is that the same Crawford that makes the hiking staff that's also a blowgun and has a spear blade option?

I take it that the "credit card" tool rides in the wallet? Made of . . . steel? Titanium?

That is the same maker, Pat Crawford. That is his CCK (credit card karambit) which is made out of titanium. It can ride in a wallet but it came with a very cool kydex sheath which has a paracord tether that you run through a belt loop. As you draw the knife from the pocket, the tether pulls the sheath off.

Living in Chicago, the most likely "not terribly disastrous" disaster would be some sort of power outage, possibly leaving me stranded on public transportation (has happened to folks here). My Streamlight Microstream is handy but not bright enough outside of total darkness (when you would most likely need a light anyway), but I've been carrying my 2-123CR Fenix instead. Much stronger light, probably a better defensive weapon than a folding knife (shine attacker in eyes and kick him when he's down, crank him in the head with it, blah blah blah), and it comes in handy at work. That and a SAK leaves me pretty well prepared for day to day stuff. When I have a backpack I carry a first aid kit, duct tape, extra batteries, big fixed blade,...

The most likely actual disaster would probably be riots. Stay low, be quiet, and get home. I know the city well enough that I'd be able to move discretely from anywhere I'd be. No firearms (Chicago laws are odd, should get something anyway) there, but we've a 3rd story apartment and solid doors top and bottom. If something horrible happened I'd probably be called up and handed an M16 anyway. Getting up to my unit in the suburbs without a car might be a bit more difficult though. :d
