I made this little fellow for myself. It's my first time to use bone as a handle, hope ya'll like it. It's a 1095 SR... It's just 6" overall. Hopefully it will be just right for everyday chores...

Hello elginrunner: You did a outstanding job on that knife and super on the handles work as well. I use 1095 most of the time in my shop as well. But I like using 1084, and 52100 to. God bless and you are doing ok from what I can see.

Nice little knife you made there! If you don't mind sharing, how did you finish the bone handle? It looks quite smooth and shiny. -Matt-

I was pleased with the way it turned out. I went to petco and bought the bleached cow bone (without flavor!) and just cut the pieces out to fit. I sanded the slabs to a 400 grit, which got them pretty slick... then I used my dremel, buffing wheel, and craftsman "white" buffing compound.... they came out slicker' than ... well you know!

I'll be damned! I never would have thought of using bone from a pet store! Thanks for sharing! -Matt-

That sure is worth being proud of!! Just imagine what youll be making in the years to come!!
Great Job!

Nice knife! Wish my first attempt was that good... :)
Be careful when grinding bone, mother of pearl and antler. That stuff can wreak havoc on your lungs. Use a breathing mask with dust filters.

That knife is elegant and looks like it will earn it keep. Sort of like a dressed-up Mora. Nice work, make more!

I've used rawhide from dog chew toys but not cow bone :D

Why does the antler from a small whitetail STINK so much when drilled or ground? I'm not allowed to work on it in the house OR in the shop at work, it's so disgusting. You can taste it in the air, for cripes sake. I guess this is because it's so soft (relatively) inside?

I ground on a piece of what I was told was elk antler several years ago, I don't remember it smelling strongly or bad. Sure not like this whitetail. (the pieces are very close to the same size in all dimension.)

Sorry to veer off-topic as usual :o

i think its the bone marrow you are smelling in the deer antler.since a deer sheds its antlers every year i think that the fact that the antlers are so new that the marrow stinks. i know the smell you are talking about.

That's what i've been working on tonight... designed it just the way i wanted and wham, realized i forgot to attach the belt slide....:jerkit:

Ever just had one of those days:eek:

The cow bone doesn't exactly stink, but it don't smell like roses either.... Oh and FYI.. I dont think I'd try and work it in the house, if you wanna stay married. The fine dust particles just hang in the air and take for ever to settle.... not to mention every thing gets a fine coat of cow dust....

Very nice, especially for a first attempt. I too would never have thought of petco as a supply for handle material. I shall be heading there for cow bones. lol. I have some whitetail deer leg bones from a harvest 2 years ago and it still smells like hell. I think this would be a better option.

Keep up the great work!
