well sorta. after much deliberation, with myself, decided to strip my ruck. i was among the first to beat up one of these, so why not be the first to see her naked. at least post naked pics.

has the greyish undercoat, which i already knew, and the desert camo took some elbow grease to get off. one of the more difficult coatings to remove in my experience.

now the really difficulty part: satin finish this bad girl!!!

more pics as the project unfolds....

dont use styrofoam as a backing. paint stripper will melt the foam. lesson learned.

Mark,

Is that a Ruck or AK? The finish underneath looks very good on this one. From far away it looks almost DC. The dimples look very shallow.

its a ruck. the dimples are average depth. the problem im finding is there is a dimple line on the primary bevel on each side. one runs about half the length of the blade.

this is gonna be tough!!! i have no grinders or such, only paper.

Mark,

There shouldn't be dimples on the the primary bevels. I have stripped quit a few knives and none of them had dimples on the primary. Although I did have some deep nasty gouges on the flats. Those gouges look as if someone skipped a cutoff wheel across the surface. Those are the hardest to get out. Have fun if you plan on doing it by hand. It will take a long long time ;)

Just go pick up a 20 dollar 1/4 sheet hand sander and glue a hard flat surface such as micarta or plexiglass on top of the soft foam. It will make life much easier. The hard flat surface is to prevent the foam from rounding out your flat edges.

I just notice another thing. Your ruck doesn't have those ugly corrugated bevels.

i will have to get the hand sander. there are definitely dimple lines on the primary bevels. ill post some pics tomorrow. there is also a deep grind gouge on one side were the bevel meets the flat. it is about 1/4" and circular.

no way will i be able to get these out hand sanding.

and, no, the rucks have no cbt's. :)

Does the paint stripper affect the handles? Or do you tape them?

Mark,

You might also consider just hand rubbing the hell out of it with a sandpaper block with foam padding (to help contour a little) and some 2000 grit. That's basically what I did with my SHBM and it turned out great! The dimples/grind imperfections look really cool when polished up. I finished it off with rubbing compound to polishing compound. Might save you some trouble too :p.

I hope the micarta scales are ok. Hopefully that nasty stripper sauce didn't do any damage to them.

I think you should polish the blade without removing the dimples, at least on the flats of the blade. Looks good that way, like rustic....

Also, Morimotom, what is a reasonable price to pick up a fatty Battle Mistress , either with or without the corrugate grinds??? if A person could find one lightly used. I am having a tough time finding a consistent price (and what with all the different options and variants, and me being a newbie to Busse's).

OH, also I have to add that all the Busse user's/poster's on hear are really Jearks..........I did not even know that I needed a Busse till I started listening to you all, and looking at all the sweet pics of Busse knives.

Thanks a lot, now what am I supposed to do.........how am I going to explain to my wife that we (including my 2 year old) are just going to have to start living on the streets because I just had to have a couple knives.........(I can just hear it now, "Dadda....me hungry" and i will respond......"just go kill and clean something with your Battle Mistress son......careful not to cut of your little 2 year old hands........").

Like I needed another expensive habit (and me being in Law School means I a too poor to buy anything right now).......mmmh......two kidneys, I don't need two kidneys......

Hey, anyone need a Kidney, maybe part of a liver (they regenerate don't they)????? we can talk about a partial trade......half of my liver for a fat battle mistress????

Great job you've done on it. It looks great and I like the look of the INFI dimples:D

That looks great, and it will look stunning all polished up

I wish I had a ruck...

I think you should keep your eyes on IdahoSkunk's BCS (Busse Company Store). Maybe it's just me, but I smell some more Battle Mistress offerings from him in the fairly near future. Cheapest place to get one these days is right from the Skunkster!

Yep, that looks like a job Mark.

That will only make you more proud of it when finished.

Your off to a great start, look foward to the finished pics!

OP...what information have you got :) .....

I just keep my eyes and ears open, is all. I try to pay attention to every little bit of 'text' the old Skunk puts out....

Mind you, I could be wrong.

For example, I'm sure SOMETHING will be posted this Tuesday or Tuesday night...but it'll probably be a new Badger or two.

no affect on the scales. micarta is tough stuff. aside from sulfuric or hydrochloric acids, i dont think there are many liquids that will affect them.

thats my plan. i like the dimples on the flats, but unfortunately the sides are not ground the same. there are variations along the primary bevel that are only evident once the coating was removed.

Mark, glad to see you will join the EXCLUSIVE club of Satin Ruck owners. :D

here was mine, with some info on how I did it. If you don't go for the perfection, like a Ban job (great work ) then it doesn't take all that long.

We look forward to your finished pics!

forgot about yours!! ill have to hit the hardware store and pick up the scotch brite wheel. also thinking of trying a hand sander or grinding wheel. ill practice on something else first of course.

IMHO just hit it with the 3M scotch-brite attachment and you're good. It's gonna be a user right? It looks sweet as is. It has that industrial Mad Max look. ;)
