Just posted this over in the for sale forum.
Forged 1084...NS and copper fittings....Mammoth tooth handle.
My first time using mammoth tooth....interesting material.
Let me know what you think....good or bad.
Thanks for looking.

That is some swesome Mammoth tooth Mace! Excellent colors. I might have gone for just a SLIGHTLY larger blade (maybe a little wider to balance the width of the rear end of the handle...though that may just be the photo angle).

Either way it's a 'beaut!

So, what was working with mammoth tooth like?

Cavity creep? NOW you're showing our age bracket, for sure... next thing I know, you're going to be dipping a piece of chalk into green food coloring and snapping it in half to show, um... what the hell was that supposed to show, anyway?:D

This is actually my most favorite-ist knife that you've made, btw. The combination of mammoth and the 'stripe' from the NS and copper just does it for me.
Plus, it's a knife that isn't as big as I am, so I could probably carry it!:D

That is a beauty Mace, what did you think about working with the mammoth tooth. I've got a set of scales for a folder, but I'm afraid it will be more trouble then its worth. Awful pretty stuff though.

I'm intrested to hear how it was to work the mammoth tooth as well. I talked with a jewler once who said he glues mammoth tooth to a board before doing any cutting because he said it's layered soft-hard-soft-hard and the wood kept it from splitting, then he sanded the wood off.

Is the tooth for the scales stabalized, or is that how it naturally is?

Great knife Mace! That wee little copper band really does a great deal for the whole package!  Makes me want to go work the set of scales I have waiting.... Almost.

Thats just a great knife there. Beautiful. I think mammoth tooth makes the most beautifull handles. So much "grain" and color. Nice job

Thanks guys!:D

Justin, thats a good idea about backing the scales w/something...you are right there are hard and soft layers. The white-ish part is the dentin...and the browns are more of an ivory.

This set of scales was stabilized...the hardest part was doing the mortis for the tang. Drilling was not bad. I cut it on my bandsaw(metal)...shaped it on the grinder and then did all the finnish by hand....then a "light" buff.

This is funky stuff...and I have heard all kinds of things...from it chips easy to "it just crumbled to dust".

There was a good article in Blade I think last month on this subject.
