CCL Survey

Thanks to all the contributors to this thread so far. I for one am getting many ideas from you folks.

Is it not insane that you can apply in Illinois for a Concealed Handgun Permit but it does not allow concealed carry of a knife? I will jump thru the hoops and pay the sin tax and get an Illinois Permit, but until then my only carry time is at work, in the store, back pocket on the right side, not a fast draw rig I know, but it gives me peace of mind. In this part of town, I prefer that the gun is not always fully concealed anyway. Prefer that the bad guys use some judgement and go rob some one less dangerous.

I am still very much on the fence about getting the Illinois permit (I have Utah and Florida) because the state did a great job of structuring the rules so that there is concealed carry but the places where I could do it are so limited in effect I couldn't really carry. I take the train into the city most days and it is illegal to carry on public transportation. Many businesses in the city already sport the signage that bans carry in their establishment and I have even seen the ban on construction site offices (of one of the two largest GCs in Chicago).

So, with that said, like The Most Interesting Man in the World..."I don't carry often but, when I do, it's Smith & Wesson!" S&W M&P 9mm in a Blackhawk SERPA. I bought the SERPA as kind of an all-around holster. It isn't concealment oriented but I have trained with it quite a bit. I will most likely end up with an IWB holster eventually.

I do. I think you've seen my setup.:D

You can TRANSPORT on the train. You can have the firearm in a case or other container with a loaded magazine (or moon clip etc) with the firearm, and the firearm unloaded or broken down.

No reason you cannot take one with you.

Well I know a guy who's an instructor so.... :)

So, from a realistic standpoint as it applies to me.....

I have my weapon in an approved case on the train, it is unloaded. We arrive at the station, where hundreds of people stream out of the train into a station where multiple trains arrive and depart. It would be completely unrealistic to think that I could arm myself without looking out of place anywhere except a stall in the bathroom. I could then walk the mile plus to my office and once again have to secure the weapon.

I am not a lawyer but my understanding of the law pre-CCL, I could have legally carried an unloaded firearm in a case in my backpack. The only benefit to my everyday is now I could carry for my walk to/from the train? Obviously I am not including the weekends but, from what I understand, I can't even carry in our local Forest Preserves!!!

Like I said, I am still on the fence but for the city it's a pocket friendly blade for now.

Now days either an XDS 45 or Glock 19. Holsters- Old Faithful hybrid IWB, Remora, or Blade Tech IWB

Used to pocket carry a 380 some, but haven't had it out in a long time.

I've got a permit,but no pistols anymore.:(
I hate wearing a belt so my carry options were limited and is why I carried a KelTek P32 in my EDC pack & back pocket in a non printing pocket holster.

If you end up with a pistol again and want to pack IWB without a belt you might try a Remora holster. I found out about them from a guy I met at the range. He was carrying a small Sig in a Remora holster IWB without a belt on. Said he couldn't wear a belt for medical reasons, but he really liked that holster. He said it stayed in place even without a belt on.

I've carried for 20 years. The first 10, I carried everything from Glock to CZ to 1911 to you name it. I own 11 Glocks, just to give you an idea of what the Powernoodle Arsenal is like.

But then I tried pocket carry, and I was hooked. Yeah, you give up capacity, sight radius and all of that good stuff. But the ease and comfort of pocket carry is unsurpassed. And with today's lineup of compact pistols in 9mm or .40 with 7+1 capacity, pocket carry is not a bad option. You dress how you want, and never worry about your gun poking out from under your shirt or getting grabbed by Aunt Millie when she hugs you. You stand there looking completely domesticated, all the while with your hand in your pocket ready to draw.

I rotate between these: Kahr pm9, Kel-tec PF9, S&W Shield, Ruger LCP and S&W 442. The latter gets most of my time. Primary holster is an Uncle Mike's pocket holster in whatever size is appropriate, which you use for 2 years and then throw away. I received recently a sweet kydex pocket holster from Alambama Holster, which is working out pretty good too.

Carrying a cannon on your hip is fun. But after 15 years of doing it, comfort and quality of life kick in. You'll see that probably most old timers who carry (I'm 51) will have something like a small revolver. Its spicy enough to change someone's behavior, but small enough to carry with ease. Rock on.

Here's a pic of my XDM .45 3.8 with Crossbread Supertuck

I figured I should post my meager collection, so here goes.

"The One." My 1997 Kimber Classic .45. I replaced the plastic trigger and mainspring housing with Wilson Combat parts, along with a Wilson titanium firing pin, Ed Brown Bulletproof slide stop, and replaced the full length guide rod with a standard one. I use McCormick stainless 8 round Powermag magazines, and in over 8000 rounds, have never had any sort of malfunction.

The holsters I have for it are a Kirkpatrick crossdraw and an old Roy Baker pancake style.

My custom Glock 17. I`ve cut the grip frame down to Glock 19 specs, rounded the front of the trigger guard, and put Heinie Straight 8 sights on it. It now uses model 19 15 round magazines.

Kramer horsehide holster for the Glock.

I know, it`s a "mousegun." I bought this little Beretta .25 for my Dad about 15 years ago. When he passed away 10 years ago, I inherited it. It had never been fired, so when I shot it I was surprised how accurate it shot, nice little gun.

Considering the kind of weather we get in Phoenix, I haven't had any luck with a Sig 229 or a Colt Commander, so years ago I went to a Walther PPK. However a few months ago, I picked up a Sig 232 and love it. I know, some of you guys are going to knock the power of the .380 but I can hit where I aim and shot placement is everything.

I like your style John. I did my 17 in a similar fashion.

I don't have the experience powernoodle has but do find myself carrying a small gun in my pocket more and more. I was discussing this recently with some friends. I told them one of my favorite carry guns was a S&W 351PD and got hit with some quizzical looks. Afterwards I did a little looking and found this article online: http://www.buckeyefirearms.org/node/7866 I found it interesting and thought I would pass it along.
