CDN Kayaker Fights Off Wolf With Knife

Good thing he had the knife. I'm sure a pistol would have been worthless.:D

i hike that area all the time :D

thanks for the heads up its a good warning.

No, no, no... wolves don't attack humans they only eat mice. There are no documented cases of wolves attacking humans. Nope, sorry, unconvinced, nothing to see here, keep moving...

Breathing oxygen again... Unarmed humans are food, we need to keep that in mind. Still the most dangerous animal you will meet is a human. How many people are murdered in Alaska or Canada each year as opposed to eaten? At least the animals are being honest about their intentions. Mac

The kayaker, who was on a four-week solo trip from southeast Alaska to northern Vancouver Island, asked not to be identified or interviewed, saying he doesn't need the publicity and is concerned that news of the rare incident will only give wolves a bad image.

You have to read between the lines, here. He knows he was at fault,:(
because he did not follow Wolf Procedure 101: dance with wolves.;)

The thing that puts us at the top of the food chain is our brain and its ability to make and use tools and weapons. If it werent for that, well.... look at your nails and your teeth and then look at those of most other predators......yea, we'd be SCREWED.

I just heard that a child was 'mauled' by a mountain lion in BC. " It might have mistaken the child for a deer or other prey " !! That's right , people are never prey !....Soccergod, never have a weapon with you that may incite trouble. My professor friend in DE said the officials don't want the campus security to carry their guns !! These campus police go through the state police academy so they are trained .My friend will speak against this in an upcoming meeting .

There were over 800 confirmed kills by predatory wolves in one year alone in India.
Historic accounts in America also show clearly wolves do hunt and kill humans.
History also proves where men have guns and have shot wolves, wolves learn to fear humans and avoid them.
It other areas like India, humans are on the menu.

My sister has a big cat rescue facility and when kids under about 10 come by EVERY single cat there will track the kids progress ignoring anything else until they are out of sight. It's a very scary thing to see.

I saw the same thing at the old Central Park Zoo in New York when they still had lions there. A lioness in an outside cage was crouched and rushing side to side watching a group of little kids approaching.

Mete, I agree that you shouldn't carry anything that will get you into trouble. However, in a situation where a tool is going to save my life, I will continue to carry it, despite what the libs may think.:jerkit:

It should be noted that wolf PACKS, outside of hunters' stories, rarely, if ever attack humans. It's the rogue wolf, the one that's been forced out of it's pack and has trouble hunting, that is desperate and therefore dangerous. Wolves are beautiful animals, but are still quite capable of popping our heads like grapes if we mess up in their home.

Rarely if ever but if and when, I doubt the pack
would leave much evidence of the attack. ;)

Craving Canadian Kayakers

Crashing through the underbrush,
out of range of men with guns,
in a headlong, desperate rush,
the tired wolf still gasps but runs.

Stiff from wounds and dripping blood,
listening for the fatal sound;
Baying hounds close like a flood,
aching to take her to ground.

But the crafty carnivore
will elude the pack once more!

I don't thiink of this as a big deal in the grand scale of things. I mean, how many paople are attacked by fido every day? Just fear mongering, IMO, and worthy of the news only because it hardly ever happens.

It has only hardly ever happened in North America recently, where wolves for the last 200 years or so were shot for approaching humans.
Now,we have a reintroduced species with no fear of man.
Unless taught humans are a threat, humans are on the menu.
Hundreds of children are hunted and ate every year by healthy wolves in parts of the world where guns are uncommon.
Our State park system and hunting laws are teaching these newly intruduced wolves, humans are not a threat.
So,don't listen to environmental pseudo science and keep your kids close and have the tools nessessary to protect them.

I love wolves and dogs in general.
I wouldn't kill one unless it was a threat to me or mine.
But facts are facts.
Life is not a cartoon.
A hungry Canine without fear of humans, hungry enough,in the right sitution will hunt kill and eat you.
Most likely, that will attack your children when sleeping or responding to the call of nature or separated from the pack.
I love my SAK but I would want more than that when dealing with a hungry predator.

I agree with everything you're saying, Grappler. I'm just not overly worried about an incident like the one mentioned in comparison to the much more threat of being attacked by own dog.:D

Esav , there was an incident in one of the national parks where a 12 year old was killed .The comment by an official was that the kid was the perfect prey size for a mountain lion. A cat is a cat. I went to the Space Farms zoo in Sussex Co NJ.I was watching a large male african lion who was sitting in the back of his cage . A woman walked up and immediately the lion got up and went directly toward the woman. I backed away [something was going to happen ! ] The lion then turned around and sprayed the woman !!! Marking his territory ??
