Coop has worked his usual magic, but in all fairness Mr. Ferry provided some REALLY incredible steel to work with.
The blade on the Bowie is slightly over 12 inches and it is amazingly light and fast.

FYI, Cedar Mountain was a Civil War engagement, just prior to the Second Battle of Bull Run or Second Manassas.

Peter,You're killin' me but don't stop.I love that Bowie! That Curly Maple in the Damascus D Guard works so well,I love nice curly maple.
Not to mention the blade,it is long and lean and what is steel? :D

I didn't forget the little one. :o
It is very nice! :D They are a beautiful set and they complement each other well. :D
But I just love that D guard Bowie! :D Thanks for posting
Right now on NCIS they're at a Manassas re-enactment.

That is just a terrific matched set. I'd start harassing you to sell them to me from now, but D-guards are illegal up here. Really beautiful work, though.

This might be one of my fav' Tom Ferry work. He does an impeccable job, but there's something in the shapes he likes (elongated bowies) which just doesn't work for me. But I like it here, with the D-guard, and I also think that this knife is nicer as is than it would with his usual mosaic damascus.

Tasteful understated fittings..Curly Maple is a favorite of mine.
Nice Peter

i'm a big fan of tom's work - having added one of his pieces to my collection this past summer. this is a great set, matches up nicely and the fittings are very nice without being overwhelming. really great work.

btw - there's an article about tom in the feb 2006 issue of knives illustrated. good read.

Tom is a wizard when it comes to dreaming up and creating damascus... no question!

But this set truly has to be some of his nicest work to date. I think the whole package is a grand-slam.

I'm proud to call him my friend! :D

The maple is absolutely knock-out, Tom, myself, and the Bybees were all together when we came across the slab of it... even rough cut it was amazing. Very fortunately for me, Tom graciously gave me a few blocks of it.

Terrific score Peter!!! :D

Believe it or not, it's not the 12" of razor sharp steel that would make that knife illegal, but the guard itself. It falls under the legal definition of "brass knuckles" which is a prohibited weapon. I love d-guards, but don't own one for that reason.

Let me add that the copper accents on these two knives are a terrific touch and very much in keeping with the understated elegance of both pieces.

I was greatly impressed with these as well. My preference tends to be with non-damascus blades. The fittings sure are a nice accent!
