12/28/03 at 6 pm. at night; Google search for KUKRI & KHUKURI, and after getting past the junk found about a zillion Bladeforums threads that matched, and one very important one to Himalayan Imports.

That was my lucky day, or unluckiest as far as my other knife collecting was concerned! (Or day of primary infection if you listen to my wife. :D)

So, 623 posts, 48 threads, 52 weeks with an unholy average of a couple of HI products per week and I'm STILL drooling over these things! The HIKV infection has been blunted just a bit, but I still hurry to the computer every morning around 10 am. PST and see what goodies Uncle Bill is offering for the day. (Funny thing though, my first HI khuk, a 21" Chitlangi is still my favorite.)

Beyond all the great knives though are all the cool folks I have met and come to know here and offline who have given of themselves so freely and shared their knowledge with all of us newbies: Yvsa and Dan especially have helped fill in the huge knowledge gaps about khuks and how to care for them, and everyone else has filled in all the other gaps! And of course getting to know Uncle Bill and Yangdu a little bit has been a privilege.

I have also bought khuks from half a dozen folks here offline, and in every case there was no question about the transaction, and in many cases folks trusted me for the payment while the khuk was being shipped. I don't know of anywhere else where I can experience that kind of trust and consideration.

For the next year I think I'll take the next step many of you have already taken and add some stuff to my shop to help care for these knives and work on them some more. I already have a pretty good auto and woodworking shop setup, but will add a decent 1" belt sander / grinder. It would be cool to be able to experiment making replacement handles, and with the knowledge available here I wouldn't be too far from expert help when needed.

So, thanks to everyone for your initial welcome and considerable help throughout the past year, and I look forward to hanging around for a long time to come!

Regards,

Norm

Oh well, I guess it's a little late to do anything now. ;)

Books, Khuks; what's the difference? Collections are fun. Good to see you graduate a year.

Yep, you're stuck with me! Just think, if someone had been kind enough (I mean nasty enough!) to have been dismissive or rude to me my first week here I could have saved a lot of time and money! ;) (That seems to be almost the standard at other forums I have visited by the way; give the newbies a hard time and keep them out of the "club.")

Unfortunately, everyone was kind and welcoming, and now look at the fix I'm in! :D

Glad too have you here Norm. There is always room in the heart for one more friend.:D

And just what do you mean by that noob?

Geez...to come in here and attack me like that...

;) :p :D

The HI forum has some of the nicest folks I've ever met. Am glad I came to visit and decided to stay.

Anybody with a pilot's license, a Marlin Camp Carbine and a collection of HI khuks is just on the right road. Let me buy you a beer, Norm. Err, make that Nepali tea and dal bhat. Or whatever they're serving at the Cantina today. I forgot to look at the daily specials... or is that later today.... ummmm, daily specials....

Hi Norm - Where do you keep all the khururis?

I started visiting about the same time, perhaps a few months earlier. Nasty was mean to me my first week. It didn't work - Yvsa came in to say something nice.

I am still here, but haven't gotten nearly as many khukuris. But I am running out of space.

I just need a knife every once in awhile to keep the jitters down.

One of the most charming traditions of the Cantina, Norm, is that on your first anniversary here, you buy all the regulars the H.I. product of their choice! Sort of a welcoming gift from you to us.

Most won't take khuks from folks with less than a year in, you know.

So, set up the credit line, start a sign-up thread, and let the good times roll !!!

Welcome all over again.

It's great having you around Norm:) You have brought a lot of good to the cantina. However, what Kis said is absolutely correct. I will take a Rose. Nasty, you're a month past due. Don't make me send Bruise to your house to collect;)

Norm,

I make knives as a hobby and have a 6" and 1" belt sander. I received a Sears 2" belt sander for Christmas and have been using it the past few days, and really like it. I highly recommed that you consider the Sears 2" belt sander rather than a 1" one. It is much more versatle, and you can use 1" belts on it if desired.

Oh, man am I in trouble! I'll see if I can get a deal on a couple of dozen kagas katnes; how does that sound? :D Either that or take out a second mortgage and send the check to Uncle Bill!

Seriously, this year I really have to try and reign in the new HI purchases as my budget for that has been overextended, especially in October and November last when Sgt. Karka started sending a lot of cool new stuff. Maybe 1 or 2 UBBB's per month if I'm lucky, but my wife is running out of patience and I'm running out of space. There were so many models out of production when I started that I wanted to get at least one of each as you never know when the kami's will just stop making something. For instance, we had a flood of hanshees a couple of months ago, and not one since, and I was never able to snag one, so that's one model I'd like to get.

I bought a display cabinet and was able to add wooden strips to the front of each glass shelf so that the khuks can be stood upright with the handles against the back wall and the scabbard tips in the wood. Instead of just 4 or 5 khuks lain sideways, you can get 2 or even 3 times that many on each shelf. The longer blades are in my old gun cabinet, and I have several on the wall and on 2 racks in the closet.

Anyway, I'll be working on that "khuk for each of the regular forum guys" thing, but it may take me a while to straighten out all the details with Uncle Bill, so don't panic if you don't receive yours in the mail for a bit! (-:
