Celebrating 1 Year at the Cantina!

Norm,

I make knives as a hobby and have a 6" and 1" belt sander. I received a Sears 2" belt sander for Christmas and have been using it the past few days, and really like it. I highly recommed that you consider the Sears 2" belt sander rather than a 1" one. It is much more versatle, and you can use 1" belts on it if desired.

Clark, thanks very much for the reference. I am just now looking into them, primarily by checking out all the adds in Blade magazine, but it will be summertime before I am ready to make the purchase probably. I think Yvsa also has a 2X72(?) as do some other guys. I didn't know that you could run 1" belts on the 2" machines. For that matter, I thought Sears only made a 1X42 machine?

I bought a 4X36 sander from Sears a couple of years ago for woodworking, but the platen is all fixed and it just is too wide and too hard for working on knives.

I'll check out the Sears model and thanks again for the advice.

Regards,

Norm

Hi Norm - Where do you keep all the khururis?

I started visiting about the same time, perhaps a few months earlier. Nasty was mean to me my first week. It didn't work - Yvsa came in to say something nice.

I am still here, but haven't gotten nearly as many khukuris. But I am running out of space.

I just need a knife every once in awhile to keep the jitters down.

Arty, no, Nasty was a good guy right from the start! Must have been having an off week. ;) :D Besides, I think that "Nasty" thing is a big front; I've spoken with him on the phone and he speaks like a banker or politician who has had formal speech training. Very distinguished sounding, really. Hey! That's it! Kinda like Al Gore! :)

Seriously, the only weird thing about the forum then was the tail end of one of the threads that led to the first bannings of BF I believe, where he kept apologizing again and again and again and AGAIN to the forum for having lied about being a war hero or Vietnam Vet or super Navy Seal or something. (?) It was confusing as hell for a while trying to figure the whole thing out and wondering what everyone was talking about. I kind of lay low for a week and eventually he was given his walking papers and things greatly calmed down and started making more sense, which was a relief!

Best Regards,

Norm

Norm,

The 2x72" sanders are great if you can afford them, most are somewhat expensive. The Sears is a 2x42" and you can use the 1x42 belts on it. It is new as they didn't have them last year. The platen is adjustable or removable, and it can be rotated to use vertical or horizontal, also has a 6" disk sander on the side. I have two different 1" sanders, and it looks like they will be gathering dust from now on.

I use a Sears 2x42 also. Works great for handles and convex grinds, but the platen vibrates too much for me to get a good flat grind.

I have split a 2" wide belt to 1" wide and less several times on occasion when I needed to get in close to something and the 2" wide belt was just too big. You do have to run them in the center of the drive wheel, or at least on mine you do as it won't track true otherwise.
And you have to watch what you're doing or the belt will slide over suddenly making for an exciting "Oh SH*T, WTF did I do Now?" exclamation. :D ;)

Good advice, Yvsa! Also it pays to use a platen liner when you run the 1" belts on a 2" platen. Otherwise the edge of the belt tends to score the platen.

I plan to get a Grizzly sometime in the next year and use the Sears exclusively for handles and sharpening. Meanwhile I'll just stick to convex grinding those heaps of slag I've been pounding out in my garage lately. ;)
