Celebrating my birthday with Ethan Becker and Doug Ritter

yeeeeee hah :D

Not quite sure what that means, but thanks anyway, I guess.

I'm never too far away but I try to maintain a low profile around this group. :)
I rarely if ever fail to watch your videos.

Always glad to have you along. :D

Happy birthday, DOC. Loved what I've viewed so far but I haven't finished cleaning the gutters so they're bookmarked for later. Always puts a smile on my face watching your vids. And you'd easily pass as a young sexagenarian (hehe)....I guess woods time does a septuagenarian good ;).

Thanks GSOM. I'm sorry that first clip is so long, but I thought it captured what I was trying to say and to shorten it, would have removed some of the desperation. :)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOC.
Thanks for the video.

Thanks trailbum.

Hey Doc.....
I finally watched the videos...... A great good time I would say..... You and Phil make quite a team..... I love your approach and learned a bit into the bargain.... Thank you..... My friend Dave Marple is dropping by today and I will be sharing them with him..... We met at one of Charles Worsham's fire classes years ago, so these are especially apropos......

BTW, I was saddened by the prospect of your departure from these environs but, I would have understood perfectly......

Always good to see you here and I hope someday to meet you and maybe do a little " woods loafing"or, depending on location "bush loafing"....... Or maybe just have a beer and a talk....

My best, as always......

Ethan

Thanks again, Ethan. Phil is great to work with. We are very like-minded when it comes to bushcrafty (for want of a better word) stuff.

It would be a pleasure to meet you as well, but I'm not much of a traveller. However, if you ever get up to this area, be sure to give me a shout and we can get out and share some of the goodness, that is Southern Ontario. Actually, if any of the Becker sub-forum types are up this way and want to get out and play for the day, the same applies.

One year, Tonym from Connecticut (and the Wilderness and Survival sub-forum) did just that and we managed to get out and have a great day. In fact, if you're interested in his visit, this is what we did. If you check out that thread, ignore kgd's pictures. It seems like he leaves them in the photo hosting site only so long and then replaces them. Makes for some interesting reading at times. :)

Besides, Ethan, I can't depart from these environs. I have to be here when you bring out the 8" bladed BK-2. :D

Going to try the bird trap today (when the rain lets up). Doc, do you have a link for the video you first saw it in? Haven't had much luck searching youtube.

Also, the fire insurance is outstanding advice. I carry a little tin with charred punkwood to catch a spark, but never used unaltered punkwood as a coal extender. Brilliant.

Happy birthday Doc!

Thanks for the great video. I'm a novice and definitely picked up a lot of tips from it. Do you have more videos? I looked on YouTube, but it shows your channel as having no content for some reason.

Thanks again, Trade. When you do the birdtrap, shoot some video. For the birdtrap: URL to video: The fire insurance is just that. Why take a chance on your coal falling apart when transferring. Use the punky wood/fungus, whatever and transfer it along with your coal, and you won't have a problem. And as I said in the video, especially relevant when getting that fire is important.

Happy birthday Doc!

Thanks wildcat. My channel is unlisted and I post the URLs here at BladeForums for anybody that might be interested. As far as other videos, we did one about comparing Cincinatti Machax to Kabar Machax and there's a few tips in it. Found here.

Thanks Doc. I do remember watching the Machax video a while back. I definitely look forward to any future videos you might post.

Hi Doc,

I'm a bit late, i just found this thread by chance. I will look at those videos with interest as soon i've some time for.

It's been a while we don't have talked about knots.

Anyway, happy birthday, keep your good shape.

Hey dantzk8. Thank you. It's been quite awhile. And yes, I'm still playing with toggle knots, although I haven't come up with anything new lately. How about you?

Doc

Hi Doc,

I'm fine, still playing with ropes, trying to find the perfect knot, a one Ashley would have described in his book. But well, nothing conclusive yet.

I'm retired now, and came back in my deep forest of the north. A lot of things to do, actually overbooked, heatwood and the like... I like to think it's why i don't have got anything.

Be sure that if it happens i will show you it. Be patient!

Great videos as usually, i do like the trap; your friend Phil does a neat job with a knife.

Great thread as always, and happy belated birthday to you sir!

Very nice to see the RSK Mk2 (BK-12) in action and obviously well-used. Very happy you are enjoying the knife.

Happy Birthday Doc!! Super cool videos. I like that you talk and give tips the whole time. I watched all of em. Interesting strategy to keep smoke out of your face near the end there. I laughed out loud. I agree with you on choils - but disagree about multitools, I love my leatherman wave! :D

And you don't have to apologise to me, I got myself my own man in a white tank top now!

Hey Derek, thank you. Haven't seen you in here much, lately.

Goes to show you that looks can be deceiving. It was really the first time I used it to any degree. It looks the way it does because of my unfinished sand paper stripping. And, yes, so far I am enjoying it quite a bit.

Hey Captain Airyca, thank you. I'm glad I gave you a laugh. I started thinking, in rewatching the video, that I did such a good job of keeping my face straight when using the fan, that someone may actually believe I did it for real, especially since nobody commented on it. I hoped the fact it was pink, would be a clue. And as far as multitools go, I bet you've never handled a Victorinox Swiss Spirit.

On a final note, I'm glad you have your tank top fix readily available. It takes the pressure off.

Happy belated birthday, DOC!

Great vids, btw. You guys are fun to watch. I'm taking some lessons on that. As for bushcraft fans, pine pitch, and primitive fire insurance... well... at least one of them is a great idea. Coincidentally, I was at Ethan's bumming around the bamboo patch when you posted this. We were taking our 20s out for some exercise.

Thanks Rick. We have a lot of fun doing them. Yes, I just don't understand that pine pitch thing.

Doc

Hey Doc and Rick....

I think using pine pitch in that manner grows blisters, faster....LOL...

Enjoyed the videos. I think I need a BK12 and of course a pink battery powered fan. Thanks for sharing and happy belated birthday.

Happy belated birthday. Looks like a great way to spend the day.

I don't think you would even be able to spin the drill. Not going to try it though.

Thanks redmech. The BK-12 is one of the must-have Beckers in my opinion. And as far as the fan goes, pink helps prevent it from being stolen by other bushcrafters (geez I don't like that word but I guess it's the best to describe what we do)

Happy belated birthday. Looks like a great way to spend the day.

Thanks Don W. I always have a great day when Phil and I get together, especially when steel is involved.
