So I got accepted into the university of alaska at anchorage (well as long as I pass all my summer school classes) but I was looking at getting a new knife (I love using any excuse to get a new one) but the only thing is I'm looking for something that can maybe help me and be useful in future projects (my major is archeology/anthropology) so a good I guess utility knife I have a lite machete a izula a hest and a rc 6 what would you all recommend?

Going to Alaska. Get the ESEE-5. Big beast of a knife, seems fitting to me. The glass breaker pommel might come in handy for breaking ice. :D

Junglas. Some one needs to start a bear hunting thread, might as well be you!:D

I'd say a good Swiss Army knife:D Seriously, when I was in the field during archaeological work that was the go-to knife. Very versatile. Sounds like you have things covered in the fixed blade department.

Congrats on gettin' accepted to UoA my brother's been in AK for 30+ years, he loves it.

He currently lives in Anchorage, when ya get there look up his band, Winterland, they're pretty well known up there and play some Kick Ass music.

It's a beautiful state, you'll love the summer.

BTW the Izula gets my vote, great little Big Knife.

If I was celebrating, and heading to Alaska, Junglas is the one I would want. But that's just me. I like knives.

Izula dude. You're going to need it for all the skinning you're going to be doing!

EDIT: Wait, I think it says you already have an izula? If that's the case, get you a nice fin chopper. The Junglas seems to fit that description nicely.

Carry a 6 when you are in the field - love that knife. Also take a .44 mag with you at all times. Be sure to file the front sight off the gun in case a bear decides to shove it up your ass...

damn that would suck maybe a celebration gun would be better?

Hey there, I work for a university's CRM branch doing archaeology. Sounds like you have most of the tools you'll need for any hiking surveys and Phase II and III excavations. If you're going to be doing field schools the only other piece of equipment you'll probably want is a good multitool. They're great for fixing screens, minor vehicle repairs, and any other little situations that comes up.

I carry the HEST, a machete, and a multi-tool on all my projects. Occasionally I'll carry a larger chopper if I really need it, but mainly a machete will work. But the vegetation in Alaska is probably a good bit different than Alabama. Oh, and get a Marshalltown trowel. Got to have one of those. Have fun!

I say get a 5 and take all the rest you already have for back-up. (and a .44 mag is a great idea!!!)
