Start with a ESEE - 3 or Izula 2 so you have a wearable every day carry with you. If you need something bigger you will have time to figure that out.

Hey there, I work for a university's CRM branch doing archaeology. Sounds like you have most of the tools you'll need for any hiking surveys and Phase II and III excavations. If you're going to be doing field schools the only other piece of equipment you'll probably want is a good multitool. They're great for fixing screens, minor vehicle repairs, and any other little situations that comes up.

I carry the HEST, a machete, and a multi-tool on all my projects. Occasionally I'll carry a larger chopper if I really need it, but mainly a machete will work. But the vegetation in Alaska is probably a good bit different than Alabama. Oh, and get a Marshalltown trowel. Got to have one of those. Have fun!
Awesome thank you what sort of multi tool would you recommend?

Sorry prob a a stupid question but what's the size difference between the two?

I lived in ak for a year. Camped hunt and fish quite a bit. The vegetation is very unique. There us a plant called Devil's Club and it is best to avoid it all together. The little thorns will just stick you and fester up. I don't recall needing to cut vegetation to walk through. It is just as easy to walk around unless you are walking through a berry patch but I would rather have my hands on at least a 454 casull. I think a 5 or 6 (even though I don't own one) would be good to have. A good size fixed blade will be nice to have if you plan to hunt, camp, or fish. If you don't have any blades that size.... I would also get a nice folder. And don't forget to take a woman lol it is like 5 to 1 over there but anchorage might have a better ratio than where I was.

No problem. I carry a SOG powerlock with a V-cutter with a black oxide coating. You're gear is going to get dirty so the coating will help it there. There are plenty of great multitools and I think there's a thread on the first page in the forum talking about them (Leatherman, SOG, Gerber). The knife isn't great on the powerlock, it's fair, but you'll have your ESEEs with you so you're golden there. Look at www.rockynational.com in the multitool section, they've got good prices on dozens of models. Good luck and have fun!
