cell phone scrambler?

This older man that works at my uncles shop is always entertaining us with his great stories and recently ordered a cell phone scrambler of some sort, it kind of looks like a car alarm remote. People yapping on their cell phones is one of his pet peeves, so he takes his little keychain thinger that he conveniently hangs on the wall among the other tools, and when he presses it everybody in the shop is suddenly "through a tunnel." It's pretty funny, especially when one officer noted he was wondering why there werent any calls all morning.

Well I did a little research and these things are hard to come by, if anybody has any info on this please let me know. He said he ordered his from the netherlands or something and it was marked on the box stating what it was, and was even opened and inspected by US customs. I'm not saying its legal, i'm sure it isn't legal to use...

edit: i've now found some leads but they're all insanely expensive and a bit overkill (400 foot ranges, etc. ) tommorrow i'm going to look into "RF jammers" and see what happens.

It'd be quite a joke if you block an emergency call and somebody dies, too....

did he also tell you the story about his laser light, and how he almost crashed a passenger jet?? :grumpy:

Mods...48 to go...thanx.

They are NOT legal, they violate FCC rules.....But this shows how annoyed people get at the incredible rudeness of cell phone users.Polls show this is the thing that is the most annoying to people.

It is not legal. I believe you'd be cited for operating a non-type-accepted transmitter, operating a transmitter without a license, and intentionally interfering with a licensed service. Total fines could exceed a quarter million dollars, if I'm recalling the rules correctly.

I believe that even possessing the device is possessing a non-type-accepted transmitter and is illegal and punishable by something like a $100,000 fine.

The technology for these gizzmos was actually developed by the Isralis and is used to prevent terrorists from using cell phones to detonate bombs.

It would be great if they actually put that technology in the cinema. People who talk on the cellphone at the movies p!$$ me off.

I remember seeing them in Chinese trade catalogs about three or four years back for anywhere from $50 to $200 USD. Many of the models are "plug-in" types for use in theatres, offices and churches... you get the idea...

thanks for all the replies, I'm aware of all the legal issues. I'm also aware that a single person using one has never been caught (an FCC official stated this) simply because nobody has ever complained. As far as doctors in cinemas, if they're one movie away from someone dying maybe they shouldn't be watching a movie?

Anyway, this just came up because of my experience taking the CPT and then waiting to see an advisor the day before yesterday... people just dont have any consideration or even humility any more.

edit: oh yeah sleeping bear, what the hell are you talking about anyway? keep on watching the evening news and the special reports on potato chips being carcinogenic.

Doctors can't have a life??
I suppose you have something against emergency pagers too!!
You wanna through an insult?? Now I'm even less impressed.
The positives through cell phone technology far out weigh any negatives.

Oh yeah, thats true Sleeping Bear.. it positively sucks when some a-hole almost sideswipes you on the freeway because their on the cell talking, and trying to change lanes......it positively bites when a cell rings in a movie theater, AND, it positively blows that I have to deal with this BS more than I should. Gotta love those fking retarded ringtones out there too. No digs at you persoanally, I own a cell, but I use it in a considerate manner. Hey, remember a few years back, in the UK, there were these guys, who would dress up in cellphone suits, find annoying people talking on the phone, grab the phone, and smash them ? Those guys were crazy ! ! :p

this radio talk show host I listen to apparently has one in his studio, and apparently it gets turned on when he has a guest on. www.ronn.com

Seems like I've heard some debate on the radio whether or not restaurants and movie theaters should have these devices.

While I agree about emergencies etc. I have a question, If you are on call and go into a movie theater wouldn't you put your phone on vibrate and wouldn't you leave the theater to make sure you get everything on the phone correct ?(not to mention polite?)

I know when we do inservices in the hospital we ask everyone to put their pagers on vibrate. Staff when paged usually get up and go outside to take their page and/or leave.

There's a reason the cellphone/pager has a vibrate function.

When you choose to be a doctor you choose to sacrifice certain things. If you're on call and you don't want to switch to vibrate then you better go rent a DVD or watch pay per view.

There will always be stupid people doing stupid things. Period. How many accidents have happened because someone was changing the channel on their radio? Or getting something out of the glove compartment? Or trying to eat their McDonalds Happy Meal? Should we ban all of those as well?

Personally, I must be in the minority because cell phone useage doesn't bother me at all. If someone is walking around in a grocery store talking to his wife on the cell phone in a conversational tone (asking what to bring home for dinner), I really don't care. If someone is being loud and obnoxious, of course its annoying, but then again, they can easily be doing that WITHOUT the cell phone! Same thing applies to movie theaters. People talking on the phone at the movies doesn't bother me any more than if they were talking to someone next to them.

To repeat, stupid people will do stupid things. Blaming the device they are using is silly.

About $25,000.00 ought to cover it. All our Motorola Minitor II SV pagers don't have the vibrate feature like the newer and more expensive models, so maybe you'd like to help us out...right? I mean then we wouldn't have to offend you while you enjoy your meal in one of our fine resturants...while we get our page to drop what we are doing to go help someone bleeding to death or something....OH that's right....I should just stay home..eat a sandwich..and watch my rented DVD....sacrifice my life further....I mean getting out of bed in the middle of the night...or leaving my Daughter's Birthday celebration while I go rescue someone in need...volunteering 300 hours a year isn't sacrifice enough for some people.
Know what my pet-peeve is....whining cry-babies..spoiled brat punks...and ignorant *******s, that want to find fault in everything, make **** up as the go to justify their ignorance....( like a cell phone user did this or did that) WAAAAA....WAAAAAA...snif...WAAAAA. Yet are quick to point out how perfect they are.
Damned if you do and Damned if you don't.
I said I'm NOT IMPRESSED by cell phone scramblers, nor people that wish to use them. Face it...deal with it....you'll always have people who behave poorly.

hey, sleeping bear... just relax man... if you keep it up you're going to be the one needing medical attention. it's not worth having an aneurysm over.

what i find particularly humorous in your reply is "...whining cry-babies.." how ironic :p

I checked out your profile. You are an older dude with some skills, but you are coming off like a douchebag. If this is not the thread for you, than leave it alone. This is the one forum where it generally does not get sarcastic, pushy or negative. If you don't like cell phone jammers, great, neosporin does not even own one, yet.

I suggest you take your pager, and your attitude to Whine and Cheese, you really are not adding a lot to the topic of "Cellphone Scramblers"

Best Regards,

Wow...you must think I'm really weak and feeble. Well...you are such a sweet boy for caring....and I'm sooooo very sorry I gave you such a scare. Really didn't mean to cause you any concern.
Also...didn't realize I was whining and being a cry-baby...hope I didn't offend your delicate nature....Please forgive me.

Look, sleeping bear, i can tell you're new to the whole "forum thing" so let me just pop yer cherry. There are going to be times where you want to strangle someone, and more often than not people are going to threaten to do the sameto you. but since you're both sitting in front of your computers, it's not worth getting all worked up over. now where is that ebaums picture about arguing over the internet :p just relax and enjoy your stay.
