Centering the blade on a folder

Hi Guys,

I need a little help.

I've just finished making some custom scales and a custom backspacer for a kershaw Zing and need a little help centering the blade.

The blade was centered perfectly without my scales/spacer and is now tipped rather significantly. What are the troubleshooting methods to align the blade? Can somebody give me a little help? thanks

Did you make new liners for that folder? If so you may have drilled your pivot holes out of alignment. In fact though it just could be you haven't tightened up the pivot screw enough. There shouldn't be any side play in the blade whe it is full open when you push the leaf spring away from the blade. Frank

It appears to me that the pivot barrel could be situated such that it is not properly seated through both liners. I'd be sure that its crossing through both and not being blocked at the opposite side hole. Many times on some models this can happen if you change the thickness of the scale so it could also be that the pivot simply can't sink deep enough to actually be supported by the non lock side liner when you insert it in the lock side scale and liner. You may in this case have to recess the hole in the lock side scale a little deeper to allow the pivot barrel to seat so it goes through both liners.

No I used the existing liners so they remain constant. If I tighten the pivot up the blade centers but binds. I'll check to make sure the washers are aligned right tonight though and drill the recesses deeper too. Any other ideas?

thanks

Try loosening all of the screws/bolts that hold both halves together, not sloppy loose. Stand knife on it's tail and tap the pivot end on the side that the tip is too close to and retighten.

Is the spacer the exact thickness of whatever it replaced?

Another major cause is alignment.
Porterb123's solution is a good one if you have assured yourself that the pivot is indeed extending through both liners.

Thanks for the help guys on closer inspection the pivot pin hole was just off center a thou or two between the slab and the liner. I trued this up and bingo.

thanks again!
Craig
