Central Texas Knife show

I talked with the current World Cutting Champ...The infamous Reggie Barker yesterday. We are riding down to the show together, and I am likely to be miserable. Not from Reggies company mind you, but he makes the most awesome cheesecake ever, and will be bringing one the day before. I LOVE CHEESECAKE!!

Like Jason, I am in the process of getting my knives together for the show. Really looking forward to it. Chris' show is ALWAYS a lot of fun.

Attending shows is a rare occasion for me but we will be visiting my son and his family in Texas around this date

I would like to see as many knives as possible and was wondering if there is a V.I.P. previewing before the show opens to the general public at noon on Friday.

Thanks, Dave

When you get down to the last 2 peices of cheesecake, at least think about saving them for the show promoter and his wife :D. I cannot wait to see all of my friends and all of their great knives. I just hope my money goes as far as I need it to to make a few purchases.

Double blade trapper with clip and wharncliff blades. Knife is 3 13/16" closed and 6 3/4" open. I made this one for the show.

Don :)

Just got a call from Chris tonight with an update on the show. I've been to all of them, and am looking forward to next weekend.

BTW, he has a dining room booked for dinner on Friday night at Hill's Cafe, for a group, if anyone wants to gang up with us for some good food and live country music! Don't be shy!!

I spoke with John Fitch last night. He said that he would be bringing 4 or 5 knives. He also said that Jimmy Crowell would have 3 and Jerome Anders would have 4 or 5. I know that Bailey is supposed to have at least that many. Bill Ruple always has at least 4 or 5. Don Morrow is putting out some great slip joint folders and this is one of the few shows he does at this time. All I can say is if you are planning to come, the doors open at 12:00pm on Friday and the early bird gets the knife. I plan to be one of the earliest birds since I am organizing the show. I think Roger Pinnock may have some Bradshaw eye candy that will be coming to Austin.

As one of the poor misused individuals who has a REAL job and makes a knife or two also; I see I am going to have to figure out how to work this show into the schedule. I heard a lot of good things about it at Atlanta.
I am trying to get some things reorganized. I will be in touch sometime in the future Chris and see about getting on the waiting list.
Ya'll have fun.

GOOD GRIEF!! If Mike Williams starts showing here, we will have to move the show!! That guy has people follow him everywhere he goes. It's like he is the Elvis of knifemaking. Well, not quite as cool as Elvis, but as cool as one can be from Broken Bow, OK. :D

Just kidding Mike of course. Haveing him there would only make the show that much better and more fun.

Not to mention Austin is a really cool place to visit if you are into history, the music sceen, watersports ( Schlitterbahn water park is not far) or if you just like the hill country of Texas.

In '97, I crossed the US on my motorcycle and spent a couple of days in Austin. The state capitol is there, and it's very interesting to visit. That's where I learned that France at some point owned Texas (Texas was owned by a bunch of different countries including Spain and France, before being for a while an independant country, and then joined the US - or was it just the Confederacy? Can't recall). We then exchanged Texas for Louisiana, and then sold Louisiana for a little cash. Talk about bad business desisions...

The state capitol has that big statue on top. It used to be bronze, and since it corroded, it had to be brought down for repairs & maintenance every once in a while. One day, some smart, imaginative guy realized that it would be much easier to do if the statue was made of aluminum, so they did just that.

Here’s a preview of some of the knives Bailey will be bringing to the central Texas Knife show this weekend (August 6th to 8th) in Austin.

First, a “work in progress” (sure looks finished to me ;) ) – a fine hunting sword featuring 20” of clay-hardened W1 steel with a gorgeous piece of sambar stag and mild steel fittings. What’s left to be done, you ask? Fittings will be blued and engraved.

Next, a gorgeous bowie with a 10” blade of 1095/15n20 damascus, matching damascus fittings and snakewood handle.

This one is right up my alley!

Will post more pictures as I get them.

Cheers,

Roger

Bailey is just a little hung up on the Elvis thingie. But I do got to admit that Bailey does look pretty hot in that skin tight, sequined, white leather, Elvis jump suit. You know; the one that had the bat wing looking things on it. :D

You guys have a good show, a good time, and be safe. mike

The time has come for me to head to the show to make preparations. I am looking forward to seeing all of my friends and making new ones. And of course to seeing all of the great knives.

Well, just pulled in from the show and I had a great time! Great company in a great town... knives were bought and sold, stuff was learned, lies were told.

I said it time and time again this weekend...
I have never seen an "industry" with so many good people in it! From makers to suppliers to collectors, NOWHERE will you find so many people passionate about the craft. I call many of them close friends and always enjoy shows. The ABS had its fair share of makers representing them. Thanks for putting together another great show Chris, even though I know Nichelle did most of the work <BG>

Time for some rest now. Hope everyone had a safe trip back home and we'll see y'all next month in Dallas.

Thanks for the post Jason. Okay Bailey, Chris, others - let's hear your show reports for us poor saps that couldn't make it - and don't skimp on the details - give us the award-winners and such.

Not too demanding, am I?

Roger

Whitewinger - Thank you! Now it is OK to recoop for a couple of days.

Here is a list of award winners. Bill Ruple had about 7 or 8 of his wonderful folders one of which was a KILLER doctors pattern with Blacklip pearl, this one won best handmade folder and best of show. Jerome Anders won best fixed blade. You know that he had to make a good one considering the competition he faced. Dr. Claude Eddy won the award for best display with his 37 congress patterns displayed really professionally. He also won best antique knife with one of those knives which was a winterbottom bone case tested 88 pattern. We have an award to honor one of our long time collector friends. This is given to the person with the most mint case xx. Gene Harris from Louisiana won that one with a green bone stockman. As soon as I get my pictures I will send them to Roger or Gus to see if they will post them for everyone.

Chris I just wanted to say thank you for putting on a good one. My wife and I had a good time and we will be back next year, well on second thought, If Mike is coming we will have to think about it. Just kidding Mike, you know us Okies have to stick together. Again Chris thanks to you and your wife for making us feel very welcome and putting on a good show, the saturday night joke off by the pool was something else. You have done good and we are looking forward to next year
