This is a work in progress and isn't finished yet. I am going to dye the scales solid black to go with the OD Green Cerakote liners. This is the heat series Cerakote. This project is my first to see how it goes and to make improvements on the process. So far so good....the knife went back together without masking off anything. That is what I was trying learn from this initial attempt. The coating seems much stronger than than the black that came on the knife.

I like that a lot, and I think you're on to something. I've had significant oxidation form on BM's stainless Axis-model liners (between the liners and scales where you can't get to it without disassembly) from use with sweaty paws. It'll clean up, but is not easy. I've noted less oxidation with the black oxide stainless liners, but I know from experience with black oxide Leatherman tools that it too will oxidize.

I'd bet what you've done may have permanently handled that potential issue, since while it may wear on the edges where exposed, it's not going to wear on the inside surfaces.

Great idea!

I'm loving this Cerakote. I am a fan of scales that have a thin inner color attached to the scale. I decided to just try and cerakote the liner on this knife to add color and contrast to it. Once the scales are black it should be a unique looking knife.. This here is just my learning phase but I like how things are turning out. I will post pictures once this knife is finished. This stuff is extremely durable on the liner edge.

That really looks good, only thing I'd be concerned about is chipping on the sharp edges, will be interesting to see how it holds up. The standard black oxide looks like crap and is not very durable but it is at least thin so that's not an issue.

The edges are no longer extremely sharp after hitting them with a little sand paper, then sand blasting with 120. So slight you can't tell. The heat cerakote holds up well on the edges. I have been slapping it around a bit. The coating is so thin I don't think it will chip like paint can. It's so thin that the pivot still went through without much effort at all. The black coating that came standard on mine was looking worn also.

Have you thought about dying the scales OD green? They will end up a 2-tone green/black pattern.

I know, that would be sweet. I did have the green dye in my hand but went for the black. Now I'm back on the fence again.

The Kelly green will.look darker due to tje grey in the G10. When I get home I'll post the pic of my son's Rift with Kelly Green scales. It looks awesome with black or satin liners, but it might clash with the OD. If it doesn't look good, you can always make them black.

Some more progress on the rift. The scales are going to be solid black..... I'm just waiting for the wife to go out for a few hours one night. :D I just thought some people would like to see the liners, here is a picture.

I need a decent lanyard also.

I ended up mixing up a concoction of Rit Dye to come up with a green that I feel compliments the liners. I also think the layered black color in the g-10 is part of the rift that should not be canceled out by going solid black. So here is my Rift project in green.

Awesome green! What did you use?

I used the black azabache wich I already know makes scales slightly purple but it only darkened up the grey to a purple haze color. I ordered black Rit Dye but once again got the stupid black azabache. I then used mint green until I thought it looked good. I can't completely complain about black azabache, this is the seconded knife I used it on as the first color. It seems to always enhance the scales color.

black azabache... I'll have to look for that. I never would have considered mint green, but with the grey already in the G10, I guess that would make sense. If you decide to go kelly green, you can get something similar to this:

When my new-to-me 950BK arrived for modding, my 14y.o. son decided the black blade would look better with his green/black handle, so I swapped scales with him. Now I have a satin PE 2008 Prototype that I'm not sure if I want to "ruin" with acid etch, stonewash, and scale dying, or sell and get a different Rift for mods.

That looks great. I'm in the process of doing a 9051 auto in burnt bronze cerakote and liners on a Manix 2 the same color. I didn't like my rift at all until I made it green. Im so happy with the overhaul. In person, the finish of the OD green and the new scale color looks so nice. I'm glad went green at the last second.

My latest Rift is going to get the RIT treatment, but I haven't decided on blue or green. If I go green, I'll be aiming for the green you have, as it is a true green as opposed to the dark green on my son's. I'll PM you for your process (simmer time, ratio, etc.) if I decide on the green.

U know u can buy black rit dye and many other colors at the grocery store.

They make the mistake of getting all black azabache and not regular black. Then when you go on e-bay to order what is advertised as "black" , they send the black azabache. Its just my luck over here. Black negro and black azabache are two different colors. The regular black negro..... I have never been able to find a box. Black azabache Rit dye reminds me of a plumb. It looks black but it has a purple haze to it. The stores around me never have black negro.

Liquid RIT works better, and it might be easier to find pure black that way.
