Well I am new here and need some advise. Could not find a place to do a search so here goes. Will a ceramic kiln do the work needed to harden blades? If it heats to 1650 degrees will that be suffecient for any steel I may use to make blades?

Thanks

if its configured like the ceramic kilns i've used (for ceramics) then the door is on top and you would have to reach down into the kiln to retrieve the blade, which isn't necessarily a BAD thing, just unconvenient.

as to the temperature, 1650 will be sufficient for most any type of carbon steels, but will not work for stainless steels

won't work for A2 air hardening steel, not hot enough. Almost everything else is fine though.

The other thing you run into on ceramic kilns is yeah the come up to temp but the volume it's heating it takes a LONG time!

Many ceramic kilns can be easily converted to salt pots.
I don't recommend salt pots for anyone who is not already a knowledgeable heat treater, though.

What is considered a long time? I use a Paragon Fusion 7 Glass Fusing kiln and it can hit 1500F in less than 2 hours (at full power of course). How fast do the regular knifemaker kilns come up to temp? I'm only curious because I have no experience with the knifemaker specific kilns. Thanks. -Matt-
