Does anyone know a good tutorial explaining how to put a serrated edge on a knife?
Dib. Here you go!! Kit Carson has one on his site. Watered down, other than the usual way of using a round file. or fordem. Dremel, etc. if you have bench grinder, pick up a "3/4" or 1" White, stone for it. Use carbide or diamond dresser to put groves in exactly the opposite of what the serrations should be. Set the too rest to a steep angle. Such 25, to 35 degrees. Slowly feed the blade at a right angle to the wheel to make the cuts. Fitz was right , Every one was so busy being a ass whole, and trying to look important, that no one bothered answering your question. A white wheel is used because it cuts fast, less heat, and takes a shape easily. Hope this helps. Never be afraid to ask questions. Any true craftsman will be glad to help you out, without making light of your knowledge or skill level. Mike

Lovett, in the past I would truly enjoy being able to continue sparring with you. For personal reasons, I am unable to continue.

Your tirade gives me good cause for reflection. I recognize the need for re-evaluation and correction. I can change myself appropriately.

I challenge you to do the same. I challenge you to step up and see just how many people you can help with specific information. Not an occasional wiseass ego-laden comment, but a presence. If you are going to claim the high moral ground, then prove you live there.

That's all I will say and I'll leave off. I don't want to totally overstay my welcome here. AMF.....

Don't sweat it mate, I think we've all been there - Everyone was the newest/youngest at some point.
There is absolutely no substitute for experience. However, forums like this one will mean that you (starting at 15) will acquire a greater wealth of knowledge, at a younger age, than anyone else lurking on these forums was ever able to. I kid you not. Exciting for you, but that kind of knowledge has to come from people like Fitzo who are willing to share it with you. People who probably learnt the hard way. Prove youself here as someone who can handle that knowledge, and when you ask for it, you'll receive it. :)
-Maybe... ;)
Well its late and I just realised this post kinda just went no-where... Sorry 'bout that :D
Good luck

Can we get to saying oummmm oummm oummm now?
Calm and cool.
Fitz I understand your frustration. I also understand the young ones.

Im glad we get to the calm state of the mattter. Mark has a good head!
:D

Hey!!! It looks pretty good up here, Come on up Fitz, you'll love the view, Heee! Mike

Thanks, but I like it right where I'm at. You meet a better class of people. :D I must admit, I used to be as "good" as you, but fortunately one day I had a really massive bowel movement and got over it.

There's a saying I like to remember every so often. Perhaps you might gain much needed personal some insight from it:

"Fox smells it's own hole first."

Take care. Been a real stitch.

yep Your right on one, and welllllllll? on the other. Do you really have an Idea of what the old saying means? Can't help but wonder. Checked you out. you really did get over it. Just what were you sniffing as a chemist? Haaaaa !!! Mike Just wondering. just kidding Fitz. We can go like this foever! At least we're giving the newbies a break while we're at it. Mike http://www.lovettknives.com/

You should go help the newbies, then, Mike. I mean that. I'm sincerely sure you can be a good source of information for them if you'll reach out and help them, seeking opportunities to share the expertise 35 years of knifemaking have given you. Politely, of course. ;) I need to chill out and control a confrontational attitude I have let get carried away lately. I won't be posting for awhile until I correct that.

I am not really as impolite as I seem to you. Actually, I have always striven to be as totally polite as can be until challenged. (My deceased parents were most definitely not the trailer trash you suggested, and raised me properly. As with most headstrong children, though, I turned out as I am, and not necessarily as they would have had me.) Joking crudely with friends like Indian George is for fun, and entirely a different matter. Like you, though, I have an a$$hole made of high carbon alloy steel, and when two of us rub together, sparks fly. :) I tend to be very blunt, and the young man interpreted it as me ridiculing him. I wasn't; however, I jumped his butt when he responded in a cocky manner of younger people that I have never gotten used to, since we had no children. I thought he and I had worked it out. Then you came along. ;)

Life is too short and fragile to continue in this manner. My ticker acted up last night and, frankly, arguing with you isn't worth that. All we have to do is stay away from one another and I'm sure the world will be big enough to tolerate both of us. Truth is, I doubt either one of us make the Top 100 Hit Parade of Worldclass A$$holes, so humanity won't much notice us. :D Take care. I wish you happiness and good health. :)

BTW, I had a rather successful 30 year career as a chemist for a major healthcare company and there are a lot of people alive today in some small part from contributions I made. I have nothing to hang my head about in that respect. Take care.

Fitz. that Seemed Heart felt, and I appreciate it. I too have a short temper. Mostly on behalf of others though. One can say just about anything they want to me, and It doesn't much matter. My temper seem to be more aimed at over protection of younger folks trying to get started, and My wife. Go figure. I hate to hear that you had problems last night. I mean this in the most sincere way, and I wish you well, and good health. Also you have every right to be proud of your carrier. And Should be. What do you say that we start over, and I offer my deepest apology. Not many people get that from me. On another note. It is easy to get irritated at the brashness of youth. But then again, we were onceyoung and brash ourselves, But I'm sure we didn't think so at the time.. . Sometimes kind'a miss it, You? Mike

You guys all deserve a good whipping behind the wood shed!!

Go back and read everything you've written and I believe you'll see what I mean.

All the young man did was ask a simple question, and a good one at that.

Now answer his question. That's what these forums are all about.

Dibbler, try laying out the marks evenly using a black marker and a scriber. File the serrations in carefully using a 1/8" round chain saw file at about a 30 degree angle to the blade flat.

There are many ways to do this and this is just the simplest and fastest way.

I'll bet the other old curmudgeons (and I may be the oldest) who have posted here will now tell you other and probably better ways to make serrations. :D

Now you guys straighten up and fly right.:)

Mr. Robinson, Oh Ancient One, my first reply to the young man was valid. There was a recent thread on serrating a blade. My suggestion to search on it had a well-intended basis. I don't serrate blades, so I tried to help as best as possible. What I wrote apparently reads differently to me than to others, and thus the subsequent digression. I will say this one last time: my initial intentions were good. From my point of view the young man had little call to respond like he did and I took umbrage at it. Eventually we cleared that up, I thought. perhaps I was wrong about that, too.

As for the woodshed, bring help! :D If you tried to kick me in the ass, you would most likely hurt yourself because you're not physically in much better shape than me.;) If you managed to land a blow and displace one of these metal hips of mine, I bet you'd feel bad, too. The two people I would actually stand there and let them still beat me are both dead. Everyone else will meet resistance, regardless how feeble nowadays. :)

Kidding aside, and that was kidding, your point is understood, Don. I won't be further problem.

Mr Lovett, I apologize, too. We've chased each other over a couple threads and I hope it's over, now. I wish you well. :)

Dibbler, I apologize for the way your thread got so off track. i sincerely started off wanting to help you.

Take care, everyone. I hope this can be allowed to rest, now. I'll catch you down the line. :)

Nice apology, Mike. :)

I imagine if either one of us tried to kick anybody's ass we'd fall over without landing a blow.:jerkit:
