CFP-90 Gov't Issue Pack

Had these issued to us ten years ago at Bragg. Same time we got the Gore-Tex boots, parkas, and pants. I think all were brand new at the time (1991). They were still working on a single-point release for the pack, so I never jumped one. Don't think I used mine more than once or twice. Hate to hear that the quality sucked so bad, as it was a comfortable pack, with some good features...though I wasn't really sold on the adjustment rails, as I recall.

edit: I guess 1991 was 11 years ago...ok, I wasn't a math major:rolleyes:

As a civilian, not going to battle, I'd go with the biggest/best Gregory or Dana Design I could afford, if you want carrying capacity and comfort. As a cushy civilian, I cringe just looking at that picture of the CFP-90, or even the Blackhawk design. I'm sure it is AWESOME for battle gear, though.

What about them makes you cringe? I have a custom-spec McHale Critical Mass Super SARC that I have never found an equal to...but its $550 price tag is probably of of the reasons why. I think that the (new) CPF-90s are very well thought out and an oustanding deal - especially when you get a great deal on a used one...;)

The hip belt. I usually wind up carrying most of my weight on the hip belt. The pictures on the previous page show a hip-belt that doesn't appear to be much more than straps, maybe a little padding. Both the Gregory and Dana designs have a seriously heavy duty hip belt, with stiff structure on the back side of the padding. And the padding appears to be wider on the Dana/Gregory than on the packs in the pictures. Maybe the belt isn't as bad as it looks. But if it is, I hate to think of the warriors actually having to carrying their gear in that.

McHale's are in a whoe new universe.... :D

Thought you were gonna say because they look so "tactical":o
My DD pack looks pretty "tactical", I guess. It's an Astralplane Overkill. The Overkills were made of black 1000D cordura, and look like Blackhawk packs on steroids. It's a whopper, the whole thing was "overkill" for me (somewhere around here, I still have the whopper price tag that was on it, too)
I don't remember much in the way of details about the CFP-90 (hipbelt, straps, etc), but do remember that it was alot more comfortable than an ALICE pack...

Hi rock.

Ahhh...I see. Yes, the hip belt is one of the most under-appreciated, but most important part of a good comfortable long-range pack. The CPF-90's hip belt is definitely more than a strap (al la the ALICE packs), but it's no Critical Mass belt. I still think it's one of the better packs for the $$ - if you can find it used...like from me ;). The hip belt is padded, well attached, and adjustable - as is the shoulder harness. It's not a bad set-up at all.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the Overkill, I believe. It came out in about the '96 time frame? I remember looking at them when I was shopping for a pack. I really liked the look (of all the Dana's), but I settled on the old stand-by, the Gregory Shasta. I REALLY wanted an Terrplane (which also came in an Overkill, didn't it?) but just couldn't afford it.

The Shasta works very wll for me. I highly recommend ANY Gregory as well as Dana. And I don't worry too much about tactical. Just want what works well (and comfortable, must remember comfortable). :)

I REALLY wanted the Terraplane Overkill, too:D
Couldn't find one. The place that had the Astralplane OK thought it was a Terraplane at first, and said "yeah..we've got one, hold on a minute". Turned out to be the big mama-jama, and I bought it anyway (after they fitted me, and changed out the shoulder harness, and hipbelt). More pack than I need...but it's the last big pack I'll ever have to buy.
Don't know when they started making them, but the Overkills are listed in a 1998 Dana catalog I still have..and I'm pretty sure had already been discontinued when I started looking for one in '99 or 2000(?).
