Cg ash-1 sharp

Well you could try something like this:

You could get a longer 'loop' such as you get for a firesteel and have the chef's steel sitting side-saddle with your ASH. Might prove bulky though, despite looking badass (think Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York).

There are smaller ones such as this though for retouching, takes a little longer but then it's less to carry:

Lastly you could try one or more of these in a pocket on the sheath, maybe get a piece of leather sewn flat against the back or front of the sheath to form a very slim 'compass' pocket.

I do like the strop loaded with compound method but it can be a pain in wet conditions. I was thinking of maybe carrying a rolled up barbers strop with a container (like an old film container, remember those?) of compound so I could touch up my blades. When I have a rollmat with me, I like to carry some grit paper rolled up in it, then use that as my giant mousepad at night.

For me I would carry a small, quick fix sharpener for during the day and unless you are seriously beating the blade that should do you until you get back to camp where you can use the big strop or the big chef steel.

Hope this helps.

It does. Thank you very much for the well thought out response. I appreciate you taking the time.

And yes I remember film and I wish digital never came along. I miss the darkroom and actually having to limit how many pictures you take.

I will look into all of your suggestions and thanks again.

So does anyone have any ideas what the steel is better suited for (Fine/Coarse)?

Should I post some pictures to cheer you all on???

okay, cant seem to find my answer. I guess all the google "+++" site:www.bladeforums.com just are not cutting it.

here are some pics to go with the story....never seem to take any time with knife pics for some reason...but here they are:

So, any idea what is the best (coarse/fine) for INFI steel?

Thanks!

Those are some NICE pics!!!
Great detail in them.

And a great knife by the way.

I say take the edge smooth and get rid of the micro serrations...
a knife is cupposed to slice and cut, not tear.

Not a big fan of serrations, but if thats what works better for you get some serrations put on that beauty.

Thanks!!

I don't really like serrations either. This thing just cuts really well right now.

It is like it is toothy but not if that makes sense...

I have a CG ASH1 with a convex edge and use the Strop Bat from JRE Industries to maintain it. The owners of JRE are a couple of good guys. Right now, they are working on a sheath for my Cultie.

http://www.jreindustries.com/strops.htm

okay, now let me ask you this:

Lets say I buy this strop bat (i already have and use a strop for all other knives) would you be suggesting that i just go straight to this from the x-coarse stone???

Or are you suggesting that I convex the edge and work all the way down to the "strop bat"?

Or another alternative I did not think of???

I am kind of tired of convex blades in all honesty. The machete is convex which is perfect and so is the axe and other knives, but I am thinking flat stones for this knife.

thanks for your input (and trust me I am not "convex hating" just a little bored with them)

thanks again!

Kevin

I would convex the edge first with mouse pad/sand paper or a belt sander (a pro with belt sander did my initial edge). After it is convexed, you should be able to maintain the edge with just the strop. After a real hard beating, you may have to break out the mouse pad/sand paper again, but with normal use the strop should keep it hair shaving sharp.

Thanks for the confirmation. That is what I was thinking.

I am pretty good on a belt sander.

I think I am going to stay with flat stones for now.

That doesn't mean I can't make a change in the future though.

Thanks again for the info!!

Nice pics again:thumbup:

Been experimenting with shallow depth of field??;)

(do you mind sharing which camera-gear you use?)

Yeah, I have been playing lately. I really spend more time on landscapes and action photography. I only have about 8 years of formal photography course work. I used to be in a darkroom or out taking pictures 99% of the time. Then I had a logical breakdown and stopped carrying the camera everywhere. Now, I just keep it around for fun and don't take it very seriously:thumbup:

I use a D300. A variety of lenses. These were shot with a nikon 17-55 f2.8

Most of my lenses are older film lenses. A macro lense, a 50mm, and a few telephotos that I rarely use anymore.

im so bored with convex too,, lol.. great pics...

I know it is a weird time to be bored with them with all the awesome new Busses with them. I don't know. It is like it is too easy to get such a sharp, durable, beautiful edge. It takes away any of the challenge to me.
