CG FBM Mag G-10 Handle Mod Pictures (lots)

Yeah, I just focused on the CNC texturing on the slabs and sanded it all away, being careful not to alter the actual shape of the handle. It's still very contoured, and doesn't feel any thinner than it did before I smoothed the scales.

The grip is much, much more comfortable and isn't any less secure than it was before. Even with the aggressive pattern on the handles, my hands would slide all around during heavy chopping and the texture would just tear my hands up. It's much nicer in use now. I can even hold onto it better because of the lack of irritation during use.

If anybody has a G-10 model that is giving you problems, I really recommend this treatment.

I really dig the look. Nice! :D I had the same problem with a canvas micarta handled FBM LE, and even just taking some 600 grit sandpaper to the high points made for a HUGE difference in comfort during use. All of my users are in for the same treatment, and after seeing yours, I may have to try taking it down further on one of 'em. :) Thanxx for the pix!!

I had sanded my FBMLE the same way and I LOVE the feel of smooth canvas!

Fantastic! What an improvement. Awesome pics too.

Raining....we must see some pics please!

The texture carved into the slabs were like a chainsaw on my thumbs.

You need some callouses on those hands. :D

Great looking job! FBM-Proto-ish indeed.

Next time, you should go to Home Depot and buy a respirator rated for this kind of work.

I've thought about sanding down the LE scales a bit myself. Texture isn't the problem for me so much as just the size. Combined with the thick blade, it's just a little too much for the feel that I like.

Haha, well, I'm only 21, so I haven't really had time to build up some good ones yet. I'm far from baby handed, though. I decided to do this after a 45 minute straight chopping session with no gloves that left me with a few nice blisters and lots of discomfort during the last 20 minutes or so.

I am still waiting on a green/black G-10 handled FBM. It's getting a pair of pants. I prefer the original look. The original handle looks like a tweed jacket whereas the modified handle looks kinda like a lava-lamp. Hopefully I won't have to sand mine - I do plan on using it a lot. I wouldn't want to sacrifice great looks for funcionality, but in your case you seem really happy with it and that's the main thing. I think these G'10 handlers are great BTW.

I think the CNC pattern looks better, too. How it feels in use matters more than how it looks sitting on my dresser, though. To me, at least.

If the rough handles bother you, you could always just sand them down a little to take the bite off. It won't affect the appearance. I wanted them totally smooth because I handled a smooth G-10 Mojo and loved it.
