It is indeed good for wood or anything else that tends to pinch the blade as it goes through, since the medium will only touch the tops of the CBTs, thus less surface area contact and less friction.

They probably do add some lateral strength to the blade, but I think they add weight if anything, as they seem to be above the rest of the grind, not cut into it.

Another bonus is if you like to use your big blade for everything, they provide a good gripping surface when you choke up and grab the blade for fine work.

Wait, you can choke up on a blade with out using this "choil" that everyone keeps talking/griping about :eek::eek: weird !!!!!

That's exactly why I gripe about it - you can choke up without it, so get rid of it! Viva la choilless resistance!!

But they are purdier with dem choils

Which is?

This one:

But you don't like that one either. :D

Only because it's too thick and has way too much material left behind on the convex primary grind. The knife shape is absolutely perfect, and the lack of a choil is a no-brainer.

Give it a decent grind and make a combat grade version that costs less than a mortgage payment and you would have to pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

Re: needing the choil:

Against conventional wisdom, I like choils on shorter blades than the BM. Reason is, when I choke up on the blade, I put my little finger in the choil to stabilize my hold.
