I laid some large CGG Sebenzas down on my flatbead scanner with some blue construction paper for a background. Here are some results. (Click on the thumbnails for the big pictures. Hit the "edit" button to see how the UBB coding works)

First, some unreduced 600dpi scans of little details:

</A>

And a scan of the knives open, where best compromise I could manage with the adjustments still came out looking a little funny (1024x768 "wallpaper" size image):

And the same three patterns, closed, with better lighting (1024x768 "wallpaper" size image):

Consider this a "shameless commercial plug" for Chris Reeve CGG Sebenzas, whether direct from CRK or wherever you happen to find them in stock or on back order.

James, how do you DO that?

Great pictures. The shot of the locating hole on 2 High Mix is perfect.

I am having a hard enough time just getting the jpeg files over here.

Care to share your secrets?

(I did check out the edit button as you suggested but it seems to be gobbledygook to me.)

----WAS upside down - fixed it------
Hmmm . . . The Trailing Moon pic is upside down, I just noticed. Gotta get into my image editor again in the next couple of days and rotate it and reload it to my server.

Put knives on glass, rotate relative to light source path and fiddle with settings until your software behaves itself, more or less. I scan usually at 300 d.p.i., and lately with the "automatic" contrast and color correction settings. I sometimes size the scan area oversize to get the system to come close to copying the blue paper correctly, then crop in my image editor.

Lately I've been using the construction paper instead of a cloth for a background. You don't want grind or polish lines parallel to the light path, or you'll get either black-out or white-out effects.

When I get the image into my image editor, I change the editing resolution from 300 to 600 dpi, and make the pixel dimensions something that will fit on computer screen. And I usually crank up the brightness and color intensity a bit, and reduce contrast, since the knives are typically a very contrasty subject. And I have to crank up "sharpness" when I reduce the picture size, or it comes out blurry.

My current scanner is a Microtek, and I've been using Corel Photo House 3 to edit images. Still experimenting.

The images are stored on my web site, of course, and I link to there when I post here. If you have them posted at Photopoint, that should work too.

Thanks James. Much appreciated.

I have figured out, with Michael's help, how to get the links over here but I still can't get them to display themselves without having to click on the link. One thing at a time, I guess. At least, I can get them here.

Thanks again.

James,

GREAT PICTURES!!! You not only know how to take (scan) them, but you seen to have mastered how to get then to open up in your post. I've tried the instructions for UBB Code listed on this site. When I use the code for pics stored on Photopoint, I get nothing but a link to show up. Where do we learn (the short lesson) to be a web Guru like you!!!...

Thanks,
Michael

PS: Did I mention... GREAT PICTURES!!!???

Before posting in BladeForums, I created both the big picture and the thumbnail. There are nested "URL" and "IMG" commands.

I'll substitute { } for [ ] so the software won't try to execute these examples:

The URL command links to the picture, as in:

{url=http://www.myplace.com/prettypicture.jpg}Prettypicture{/url}. The word "Prettypicture" would show up as a link in the post.

A simpler but less elegant link command would be:

{url}www.myplace.com/prettypicture.jpg{/url} and the URL would show in the post, but not the picture.

To get a linked thumbnail instead of a text link, nest an IMG command inside the URL command, as in:

{url=http://www.myplace.com/prettypicture.jpg}{img}http://www.myplace.com/prettypicture_thumbnail.jpg{/img}{/url}.

That puts a little picture in the post, to click on for the big picture.

Here's a plain IMG command:

{img}http://www.chaicutlery.com/chrisreeve/CGGSebenza-TrailingMoon.jpg{/img}

Or, for real, with the square brackets:

CGGSebenza-TrailingMoon.jpg

A link to a Photopoint page, as opposed to a link to the .jpg file itself, shows up as a text link.

James,

Thanks for the info!! I will give it a try...

Thanks,
Michael

James,

So, how do other forumites get pichures hosted on Photopoint to show up (open) in thier posts? I just tried it again with no luck.

Maybe I should just stick to working with wood...

Michael

I haven't tried posting a picture at PhotoPoint and linking to it.

Your PhotoPoint page would have an URL which you can link to, so the PhotoPoint page would show up in a separate window. Each picture there would also have its own URL - http://yadda.yadda.yadda/yadda/yadda/imagename.jpg A "IMG - /IMG" code (using the [] square brackets), with that URL in between, should make the picture come up in the post. Unless there's a special problem in PhotoPoint's setup. Is their service set up to make users see PhotoPoint's headings and banners along with the pictures people post? They have to get something for doing it for free!

.... Or maybe not. I looked at somebody else's PhotoPoint image, and the URL wasn't in the usual format, with a ----.jpg file name at the end. So I don't know how PhotoPoint works.
