Gday all i have a question involving a knife made from a chainsaw bar. the bar is 5mm thick . What heat treating would i have to do as it is already hard any help would be great thank scott

Without knowing the steel type, there is no way to guess. Be aware that many chain saw bars are made from a steel that is designed to avoid wear, not get hard. Contact the manufacturer and ask what steel the bar is made from.
