Chainsaw recomendation - need help!

I have one the newer model stihl saws in my garage and i would be suprised if it would even start right now.It says made in china on it best i recall. My mom has my dads old mid 80's stihl 024 now thats a kick ass saw and one day hopefully it will be mine .The quality sure aint what it used to be.

Went to local big box stores to check out chainsaws. The Poulon's and the Husky's looked very similar. All the plastic does not instill a lot of confidence.
The best looking saw, as my judging of durability, was the Echo.

I snagged a used Stihl 029 thats probably 8 years old or more since my last post and its barely used at that. Got it from a neighbor for a song. Great saw! I think I like it better than my 026. It sure starts right up even after sitting in frigid weather like today and yesterday and it had been sitting quite a while since he used it. I can't believe the new Stihls are made in China. Maybe some components but if the whole thing thats a real shame. I'm not saying it can't work if so but that doesn't exactly add value to me anyway, nor make me feel really great about the purchase. I'm quite certain the ones that start with 0 are not Chinese.

It is cool to like the 029 more then the 026.....but it is not a better saw. The 026 is legend, and will outlast the 029 by a large margin with similar maintenance. The 029 is cheaper, so that is great you are happy with it.

Pretty much all of them are made of plastic now, so don't let that make your decision for you. The Echo's are nice saws, and should give you great service...much better then the Poulan. In a big saw...the Husky will win, but you ain't finding them at the box store.

The lighter the better when it comes to saws. At the end of a full day cutting and moving timber even the lightest saws feel pretty heavy :D

I agree. I also find doing cutting one day and loading & moving wood the next makes it easier on the back, than doing it all the same day.

Also, that is why so many country folk have so many kids, to move and stack all that cut wood. :D

That would be great, I always seemed to get thinning contracts where the estate forester wants a forwarder picking up logs through the day as you finish each rack :grumpy:

I like clear fells much better as you can just plug away at the stands and let the forwarder pick up the sticks on the off days :)

Thanks. Its really the size and feel of it I like better. Its not as heavy, and I got into it for lots cheaper.:D

You can buy one Stihl or five Poulan's your choice.....Dolmar also makes an excellent saw. Pro Husqvarna's that are Swedish made are very good too and buy a saw from a dealer not a box store. Good Luck!

Thanks for all the advice. I wound up purchasing the Stihl Farm Boss, from a local dealer. I liked the Echo's also but I felt there was not a lot of dealer support in my area.
