Just a quick note to report on my ongoing education with the chakma. As I posted before, I was able to get both my Khukuris razor sharp using a combo of forstner steel and chakma. I then moved on to other knives I had: leatherman(multitool's small blade), folding Buck knife, Gerber easy-out folder. Then I decided to try the knife that has always defeated my limited sharpening skills no matter what I did: Cold steel Tanto. Somthing about the grind on that sucker always messed me up. But this time I used the forstner steel (med. and fine hone on same steel) to put the kind of edge I wanted on it, then went to chakma to smooth out the edge, and finally to put the ultra smooth/sharp finished edge on. Result: a 4" bald smooth patch on my arm--just by running the blade lightly over my arm!! I was so happy I ran and told my wife, who I must say was not all that excited
. Anyway, just wanted to tell any other newbies out there that if you try hard and follow forumites' expert advice the chakma can be used effectively--even by someone as "sharpening-challenged" as myself. If I can pull it off anyone can!
Ok, that wasn't a quick note after all!
