I,m making 2 knives with this handle material and it turns my fingers and hands purple while working it . Is this normal ? If so i assume i,m going to need some sort of finish or sealer on them so the owners/user,s aren,t turned purple. It doesn,t wash off easily either.

I got it in a trade and have never used it b4 so any info is appreciated.

It may just be the dust that does it. It's like that with pernambucco.

Never worked with chakte-viga, though.

That site had a little info. but nothing about the purple.Funny thing, the wood is orange.

Yes it will turn your fingers purple. It will also turn your whole shop the same color in a few days. The wood will turn a deep orange/red with time. It also burns your nose pretty bad so use a good respirator. Did you finish the piece? If so let us see what you came up with. I personally love the wood but good figure is very hard to find.

Yep i finished both knives but i didn,t put any type of oil, varnish etc. as i would like to keep the orange/red color. I,m considering putting some *Thompson water seal* that i have on it.

Opinions ?

I,ll try to post some pics b4 i send them to my customer.

I normally just put a light wax or oil on them. I found that a vegetable oil, like camellia oil, will help speed up the oxidation process to achieve the red orange color. When I finish mine it is normally a yellow orange and will change over time. I also will put it out in the sun and this will help the color develop.
