if you read those Nessmuk books, back in the day they thought nothing about chopping down mature trees, just to get the good bark off them. leaving the entire rest of the tree sitting there to rot. to their minds, the USA was an infinite resource, and the chances of anyone else finding that campground again was slim, so it seems like they didn't care.
one of the reasons they call many shelter types "debris huts", is that they use ... debris! found stuff. already downed trees, logs, leaves, etc. chopping down live materials is usually not required. removing a few low hanging spruce bows from a number of trees is less obvious and spreads the trimming around more. low impact
when you leave, spread everything far and wide, and leave no trace either.
that's just my take. if someone can tell i was there, and that i caused damage, i did it wrong. then my ninja clan would disavow me. then i'd have a video game named after my shame.
