Chamfer edge of 9 inch disc?

I have been hand sanding my hollows and flats before buffing for a long time now but I understand a lot of knife makers like to finish sand their flats on the disc grinder. I must be clumsy but every time I try this the edge of the disc leaves a slight circular mark on the flat above my grind and I have to put the blade back on the flat platen and then hand sand it anyway. I use Rod Nielsen magnetic discs and hub and I wonder if some of you have sanded a tiny chamfer at the edge of your disc to eliminate this annoyance. I have also seen photos of makers using belt grease on their disc paper to finish sand. Will either or both of these things make my like easier? I work very hard to do a first class high polish on stainless steel so this is a big deal for me. Opinions please. Thanks, Larry Lehman

i don't have handled one of those disk, so i don't know how "sharp" or proud the edge is; but surely i radiused the edge of mine the same way i did on my grinder platen.
I find it helps both for avoiding digging on flats and for dressing the plunges in combination with the file guide.

I use a 1/16 neoprene sheet cut to fit the disc. No digging in on the edge. The edge of the rubber does get chewed up over time though.
