Change In Policy At JK Knives

I am currently waiting on payments for 6 different orders, while the customers already have their knives.

IF they dont have the money ask them if they will at least send you the knife back and then post it for sale on here. Bet it will be gone in no time. Especially if it is a knatchet. If you get my drift!

Oh and BTW I cant believe that you send knives off w/o payment. Look on the for sale forum and see how many knives are on there b/c the customer did not have the money to buy it. It is great to be all trust worthy but in todays world you will end up getting burned. I just cant believe that it has taken 2 years. Let me know when I need to send my money and it will be on the way.

Stomper, this might open a real can of worms, but if some of us other knifemakers knew who owed you money, I bet we wouldn't take orders from them until they were paid up. Just a thought.....

wow. amazing that you haven't gotten payment. not surprising.... but dang.

i've been surprised that many makers apparently take orders without a deposit.

once i get my new glasses, i'll confirm the total and send payment. i just can't remember the total at the moment.

next order will get paid in advance, shortly after the order is placed.

John's prices are reasonable. and i'm a CHEAP bastard but no argument abut the costs from me on this.

I'm sorry that things have reached the point where this is necessary, but I completely understand the policy. As I've said before, my standard operating procedure is 50% when I start and 50% before shipping, so I do (sort of) the same thing. I hope you get what you are owed, and as Mark said--the other craftsmen here will likely be willing to deny service to certain people who don't feel like paying you.

I`m not writing off getting payment, yet. I`m just hoping the mail is super slow! I have seen a couple of the guys names at the bottom of the page here reading this, maybe this will "motivate" them. Especially since I will be posting their names in a week.

Since the time between when I notify the customer I`m starting their order and the time it`s ready to ship in generally one week, I don`t think it`s asking too much for payment to be sent then.

Not at all.

I wonder if I'm one of the offenders, as I haven't heard directly from you that you have my payment.

So. I just sent another so you won't have to put up with any further delay. If I'm wrong, simply destroy the second payment. Although ... I suppose it could be a down payment for another knife ... :)

Seriously -- I'd really prefer to "pay before play" every time. I have no problem with any maker holding onto a knife until my payment is in their hands.

I'll echo what others have said. Payment up front makes perfect sense.

The way I see it, if I order a production blade, I'm 'buying a knife', and the transaction is simply an exchange of funds for an object.

But when I'm dealing with a maker - especially someone with a reputation for customization - I'm 'commissioning a work', and the labour begins as soon as he starts working on the knife. It makes perfect sense to provide remuneration for this labour up-front, rather than waiting for the end product.

All the best,

- Mike

I have to agree too. I have no problem paying up front. I have bought more than 2 dozen products from John and he is an extremely honorable man. An enviable quality in today's world!

This is udtjim, Jim has been in the hospital. I recently mailed his last payment. Hope you got it. Arlis(wife)

Mr. Clean, have you been screwed by John? No one else has. But he's waiting on payment for knives he has already delivered.

Logic indicates he is correct to go with his new policy. I don't know of any custom maker who sends knives on partial payment. Some even ask for payment before the knife is built.

Logic would say don't send a knife until you get payment.

I HAVE NEVER MET TE MAN, but enjoyed talking with him.
I have a knife on order & don,t expect no one to send product with out funds being paid first.
You let me know a little in advance & your money will be sent, LOOK FOWARD TO GETTING MY JK KNIFE!!!!!;)

This really sucks! I certainly hope is it none of the regular crew around these parts.

It only takes one guy peeing in the bowl to ruin the batter.

Sorry to hear about some not paying you yet. I think you new policy is the only way to go. And by the way thanks John for the trust you were able to put in all this time. Hope they pay you soon.
Regards
