Change of taste?

I am a little nostalgic (really means mush-headed at times). :D.

Still carry the first knife my dad gave me. It has been pictured here.
Last year a forum member sent me a new one that also finds it's way into my pocket. I think he suggested that I retire the old one, but so far I have not manged to put it up.
The second knife given to me was a Cub-Scout knife and I manged to loose it in my youth.

I am thankful to those BFC members each time I carry the new knives. The two gifts were the most thoughtful things that have happened to me here at BFC and I feel a little guilty for accepting them.

Edited to add.

From what many would term craziness coupled with being fortunate I do have some of those more expensive knives, but I still appreciate any well made knife regardless of what it went for.

I used to fancy the big lockbacks. All my buddys had 110's so thatwas the norm. I liked the Schrade LB5 as it seemed more refined than the Buck to me. (I think it was LB5) someone corect me if I'm wrong. In the Navy I had a Rigid with finger grooves. Somewhere along the line the big blades didn't work for me anymore and I bought trappers and stockmans and stockmans have been my favorite since. I do like all patterns and would buy anything old. New ones I tend to stick to ones that I will use or that is a stunner like the new BF knife.

My first official knife as a kid was a Victorinox SAK. I am not familiar with the exact model, but it had the plastic toothpick, metal tweezers, corkscrew, scissors and of course a nice spear point blade.

I now prefer bone handled, or even delrin blades. I am a Schrade nut for the Old Timer Delrin.

I waver on many styles, patterns, combinations and such. Variety is the spice of life.

Hard to tell for sure, but looks like I am older than a lot of you guys, not that, that matters. Just that its alot longer ago for me to recall..

It was a case small 3 blade stockman, givin to me by my grandfather in 1959 & which I promptly used to cut up the back of my fathers front car seat ( I was only 9) I know no excuse....

Anyway I never saw that knife again:(... But It did start a lifetime love of knives of all kinds... Yes I have some Case knives but I have never bought a Case stockman cause I can not find one like I had as a kid....I guess I never will, but I will keep lookin.

The Mercator black kat, I just did a post on abusing it at work and how durable it was, and it is.

That was my favorite knife as a teenager, thin enough to stick in your sock, good carbon steel. Got one a few years back and noticed that the blade tip hits a piece of plastic to stop the blade when it closes instead of hitting a stop at the heel of the blade.

This is a fatal flaw to me. I don't know if it is made differently or if I just didn't pay attention to that then.

You can put a pin in it to stop the knife at the heel if you wanna, still.

Slipjoints (age ~10-16) -->

'Tactical' locking folders (age ~16-25) -->

Small semi-custom/custom fixed blades (age ~25-30) -->

Traditional slippies once again (30s)...

Don't know about the exact chronology there, but yeah, the closer we get to being a grandpa the more we appreciate "grandpa" knives.

I'm 55 now, I've gotten enough glares and abuse when pulling out a more threatening looking knife. The most common uses I find for a knife call for something small and very sharp now. If I pull out my slipjoint and someone b*tches, I b*tch right back.

I've gone through many phases,Buck 110s,bowies,daggers,swords,one handed tacticals,and you name it.I still love all knife forms,but at 48,the humble Vic SAKs take care of 98% of all my day to day knifely chores.

When I was a Boy Scout I used to have one of those fixed blade, Western knives. I loved it, I wore it a lot (our house backed up to some substantial woods). I don't know what became of that knife, I wish that I still had it. As the years and decades went on, I always owned knives but only used them when I had a specific cutting chore to do. Fast forward to a couple of years ago, in my early '50's, a friend and neighbor gave me a red SAK Cadet. Not sure what to do with it, I stuck it in my pocket. It hasn't left that pocket much since as I found out how handy it is to carry a knife. Since then I picked up a few modern, non-traditional knives with clips which I used in the garden, hiking; and, fly fishing, etc. I decided that I didn't want to return to my Boy Scout roots and carry a knife that announced itself so I decided to pick up a couple of gentleman's knives. That search lead me to this forum and I haven't left. Most of my posts ask questions, I really appreciate the replies, I have learned a lot. Thanks.

I will probably stick around this forum as it a wonderful place. I have ordered two wonderful small knives from Alsdorf and I am about decide on a light trapper to replace some non-traditional knives. I wasn't planning on starting a "collection" but I am also on another maker's wait list. :rolleyes:

Hi,

I don't think my tastes have changed so much. But rather my horizons have been expanded.
