Well after 13 years and 2 months at Pepsi Cola I will be turning my notice in tomorrow. My location closed down last year and I got my Class A CDL to go into equipment delivery at Knoxville.Well the company has down sized so much now and layed so many people off that I think changing jobs to something more secure and MUCH closer to home is best.
Pepsi was a hard but good job most of the time I was there, the dept I have been in for the last year was great, job I have been wanting sense I started with them.We were a 2 truck 4 man team until they geared down to one truck, layed off one off the guys and put me on the pick up the extra duty.I honestly would not know if my job would be done away with next week or not.Not good on the nerves with that kind of stress.
The cola industry as a whole is going away,I can't believe how much it has shrunk in the last few years, time to get out.
Anyway a Animal Control Officer job came up in my county so I thought I would try for it.The man I worked with at my old location got on last year so it will be just the two of us covering the county, nice to be working with someone I have worked with before.
The pay is less but with not spending 80.00 a week in gas it is really more money.
Wish me luck!

Congrats on the new job Jeff! I hope you enjoy it and it's nice to see good people make it through these tough times.

Thanks Guys.
I got to decide on what to do with my 401K.
I have a pension plan that I am vested in with Pepsi and the new jod also has a pension. My 401K has not made hardly any money in the last 3 years except for what I put in it and the company match.Thinking about taking the 30% hit for pulling it out so I will have a little bit of a nest egg for emergency use.

Jeff, congrats on the new job! Hopefull you will enjoy it.

Maybe somebody here will know better, but IIRC, it used to be that you could take out $ for up to 60 days and as long as you replaced it within that time frame, you did not take a hit. I know that in the short run taking the hit may seem the better option given uncertainty, but that is not the way you want to do it in the long run at all. I'd resort to selling just about anything before I took an early withdrawal hit.

And BTW, congrats on your new job. Hopefully it will be everything you hoped for and more!

Congrats HOG!!!. . . . Sometimes its fun to take a different path just for the change in scenery!!!

Congrats Jeff,

Watch out for loading metal tracks on metal decks, gets a little dicey when the decks are wet or covered with ice. It a great job, and very rewarding!!!

Congrats.

Now you can do something fun on the side - and enjoy your Busse knives.

A client of mine is an avid hunter. He's also a lineman for Verizon. So he's in his truck, early, a lot. Up and down local roads.

A few years ago, he bagged a grey fox. Wanted to have it tanned so brot it to a local guy. He charged $100 and shipped it out to be tanned. A few months later, no fox. A YEAR later - no fox. "Oh sorry. The tannery must have lost it. Try another fox."

So he decided to learn to tan his own hides.

What does this have to do with being on the road as animal control and Busse knives???

He's got a roadkill pelt collection. Never anything destroyed. Always relatively fresh kills. Good pelts are a MUST.

He's got 2 otter, a couple of beaver, a muskrat, a mink and some other various animals. He screwed up on the first few, but he has learned a new skill.

So get your knives sharpened up and keep your eyes peeled. :)

Jeff - Here is to a seamless and happy transition. I have been there!

Good luck! The new job sounds like it could be more fun than the old one for sure.

Thanks Guys.

Don't pull your 401K, it will pay dividends later. The hit is more like 35%-your tax bracket plus the 10% penalty for early withdrawal. Most people fall into the 25% bracket. Roll it over into another investment that will grow. You can ask for the rollover docs and you have 60 days to find something to put it in before the penalty hits. Your best bet depending on your age is to convert it into a ROTH IRA investment vehicle or leave it where it is if it is not losing in this market. There are many growth mutual funds out there that work well, even in a bad market.

Another thing to think about with withdrawing early on your retirement plan, is that you might also loose any company matching in addition to the 30% early penalty. I know even if you are vested, some companies yank the matching funds back.

As an animal control officer, I think you will need to carry some sweet infi along for the job.....mmmmmhh, I wonder if you could justify carrying the AK-47.........after all, it has a longer reach.

Company match is all mine.
I will have to see how the knife thing plays out,I know most any folder is good to go.The job is to be low key and not draw a lot of attention.I will be carrying and night stick, pepper spray, and a shotgun and .22 in the truck.
