Changing blade to flat grind help.

Hello. This is my first post here. I'm looking for a little help. I recently purchased a Mike Sitton Duel Action knife. I am a machinist and I cut a lot of cardboard during the week. Unfortunately the blade grind on the knife was not even close to being able to work good. I reprofiled the edge on my sharpmaker to 30 degrees. The blade is an eighth of an inch thick. It still is nowhere near usefull to me. I bought it for $800.00 new a few months ago and couldn't even sell it for $450.00 after I messed with the blade. I guess I need to make the blade into a flat grind. I can't afford to sell it, so my question is:

How do I grind a clip point blade into a flat grind blade? It's a BG-42 blade. I know I should'nt do it myself but this knife is of no use to me the way it is. I have grinders at work. Even if I have to take a couple of tenths per swip, I just need help with the process. Thanks.

wow -pretty heavy dilema! i hope someone helps reason out this one --ill be wathching. great knives by the way

Hi - could you tell us a little more about the problem you're having? You can simply flat grind the main bevel and clean up the swedge at the back if that's what you're worried about, but I think you might be looking for a different solution than the way I'm reading it.

Is the grind actually too thick and you can't get an edge on the knife? Or is the grind style causing you problems? I'm sure you'll be able to get it worked out.

Thank you guys for your replies. The problem is that it won't slice. It goes from the edge to full thickness right away (.125). Am I explaining this right? I don't know the proper terminology.

you need the blade thinned down behind the edge. i made a knife that was similar to yours and even though it was a good slicer i made it better by thinning down the blade behind the origonal edge. now it cuts like crazy. if you had a belt sander with a flat platen or a disc sander you could do this easily.

have you thought about just getting another knife? if you just want a slicer then you could get a spyderco military or centofate, then you don't have to risk such an expensive knife.

I was going to recommend Tom Krein too, but it sounds like you have an offer from Bruce Bump, who is an ABS Mastersmith and an uber talented knifemaker with mad grinding skills. That is a no brainer. Also, a modification like that performed by a widely known mastersmith would probably increase the value of the knife. Do it yourself and the value goes down, if that figures into your thought process....

14" hollow grind with a false edge sounds good to me.

Thank you guys for all your help and suggestions! I believe I would do more damage than good if I did it myself . I could just buy a good slicing knife but I paid alot of money for this knife (and I really do love it) I would love to be able to use it. I emailed Bruce Bump, so again thank you everyone. Posting in this section of BladeForums has been a great experience. :D

I'm curious. You purchased it as a working knife, and it won't cut. What do you love about it?

Also, heat treating of BG42 is very complex, and some places (like Admiral) have mistakes in their descriptions.

Is the existing grind hollow or flat. If it's hollow, changing to flat is going to take some major thinning.

Lastly, have you spoken with the maker? An $800 custom should cut well unless it's specifically advertised an an art only piece. My blades are nowhere near that price, and if one of mine were underperforming, I sure like a chance to make it right.

Rob!

I will agree with what some of these guys have said. If the knife cost you $800 I would definitely give Tom Krein or Bruce Bump a call.

Hi guys. I did get in touch with Bruce Bump! He is going to take care of it for me. I am very exited with the prospect!

I tried to contact Mike Sitton. I bought it from a web site.I could not contact him through there. Also, I asked fellow BladeForums folks but could not establish contact with Mike still.

What I love about this knife is the finely crafted machanical engineering and the beautiful lines that are a product of it's fit and finish. The hidden release action of this knife bring it up to a high Echalon of makers IMO.

It's just the blade style I don't understand or want.

Now this is a grind! Just look at the differnce. The original grind would not cut anything without a superhuman amount of force. Thank you guys for your help. Thank you very much Bruce Bump! This knife performs awesome now. Great work, great service, great price, great experience. Thanks.

The man knows what he is doing. BB:thumbup:

that is much better looking. Changes the whole look of the knife in my eyes. Bet it cuts like a scalpel now. Nice work Bruce !

Thanks Guys! It was fun job and I got to peek inside of a dual action custom folder. Something we dont get much of in my state.
