Changing Scales On A Busse

Hey guys,

I'm a Busse newb here but I'm very interested in purchasing one soon. I have a simple, and probably stupid, question but I couldn't find the answer to it anywhere I've looked so far. Admittedly, I may have looked in the wrong places but I figured here was as good as any place to ask.

I am wondering if you can change the scales on a Busse? The reason I ask is, the pieces that hold the scales to the tang of the blade look different from other knives I own. Most of my other knives have screws there. Are they able to be removed by me to switch for another color or whatever? My mood changes and so my taste in color changes with it. :D The way they are held to the tang just seems to me like they would be difficult to remove as they don't look like screws.

I am just sort of looking for a yes or no answer. If it's yes, if anybody can elaborate on how exactly I would go about doing this and if scales are available separately that would be helpful as well.

Cheers!

Shpongled

The scales on Busses are permanently attached. However you can drill them out and replace the flares tubing with screws.

I don't know that I'd want to do that, I'd feel awful defacing such a thing of beauty with my shoddy craftsmanship! :D

Thanks for the reply, I will have to find something that really hits me in the right spot. ;)

If you find a blade that tickles your fancy, but don't care for the scales, Busse will put new scales on for you, for a small price

Ooo now that is an attractive option! Thanks for the heads up.

So I would assume this works with any Busse knife, correct? ie: If I were to get one off the exchange rather than directly from Busse.

dont worry busse will swap scales at any time. even long after production has stopped. cost is around 35-65 for TGLB. depends on materials. at least that was the cost about a month ago.

Great info, thanks.

Yep, I have a NMFBM in for the scales to be changed out right now.

Nice! I am looking to get into an FSH or some variant. The NM's are fine looking blades. An (NM)FBM is my next choice though, that thing is a monster! Can't get enough of those choppers. ;)

Our handles are fit to your specific blade which makes it hard to swap handles out yourself as the blade or new handles would have to be profiled to match. All of this is done by hand so no two knives will be an exact match and would require a bit of work to fit them. Like stated above, we will switch handles out for you here at the shop if interested.

Great, thanks for the direct response Garth! If I was interested in purchasing another set of handles are they available from you guys directly or would I need to hunt them down in the exchange or something? Maybe there's even a better place than the exchange to find them? I guess I am thinking older models included. For example, I may be looking for some FSH handles down the line.

I can't speak for Garth or Busse Co but based on my own experience the company do not sell the handles/grips/scales directly. As Garth noted each set needs to be fitted to the particular blade. They can rehandle older blades including supplying the grips, you don't need to source the replacements yourself. I have not seen many set of "take off" grips available through the exchange. I waited for almost a year to find a set for my RMD and they only came about through the generosity of a great member here.

Hm ok, thanks for the info. Good stuff. Looks like if I ever do decide to switch them out I'll contact Busse directly and see if they can supply the grips for me. Just sort of an idea I've been tossing around but it's always nice to have options!

Another option to consider is that any halfway competent knifemaker can put scales on the blade for you. The scales would not then be covered by the Busse warranty, but the blade still would be.

Nice! Even more options!

You guys are great, I didn't expect so many good suggestions. I guess if you know the right guy to do the job there will always be options, eh? :D

Would a Busse staff member please confirm this? I have some lignum vitae that would be PERFECT for the Boss Jack I just got.

If you love Shpongle as much as I do tacoflage might tickle your fancy. I'm still waiting on it to be released on a knife though. :(

I might have to call Garth on Monday and see what he thinks of making some scales for my new BJ out of the bottom piece of LV that's in the pic below. The figure on that one would really look good on it, I think.

This question has come up before quite recently. Busse won't re-handle a knife with user supplied materials. They keep a lot of material on hand so if you tell them what you want, likely they can accommodate your request. Here are a couple quotes regarding this very subject from this thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...om-shop-use-customer-supplied-handle-material

Not trying to rain on your parade, just passing on this info....

We cannot use materials supplied by anyone else because then we will not be able to cover it under our lifetime warrantee.

Natural materials are difficult to work with and I generally like to hand pic materials as I have used enough to know where problems will be. I try to keep a large supply on hand whenever possible. At least if a piece break when working on the handle it is us that is out the material cost and not the customer.

Garth

Alrighty then... I kinda though that would be the answer after reading up on the subject more. No biggy though.....
