I've actually used some Burt's Bees Lip Balm to lube the pivot when I didn't have any oil immediately available. I never thought to use it as protectant for the blade as well.
Thanks for the tip. In the late fall my dad always killed a couple of hogs and scraped and scalded them. He had a couple of knives that came from his father used only for scraping which were cleaned and rubbed down with paraffin until the next fall. Never had any rust problems.
